Take a look down draft memory lane and look at Darcy and Tim's drafts. There's no question why the team lies where it does.

The Sabres were good in the mid 2000's because Darcy drafted a great supporting core and found Briere and Drury to get them over the top and lead them. What's been done since is not that.

Its actually not a great comparable at all.

One is a legal proceeding.

If found guilty, goes to jail and ends up never playing again.

If found innocent is a top 5 QB in the NFL and will get treated as such.


Eichel is all about if he will ever be able to return to form again after a very serious surgery.

Eichel’s comparables are Joe Thornton, Rick Nash, and possibly the ROR deal. Healthy or not he is not getting close to what he is worth.

And Pommer, Roy, Miller, Soupy and Afinogenov all played at a 1st round level, along with Vanek. Team could have been even better if he actually hit on more of his 1st round guys. Stafford and MacArthur were quality guys too. Finding FAs like Teppo, Spach, Drury and a couple savvy trades like Briere and Lydman were gravy. But that team wouldn't have gone anywhere without those draft picks.

I think 2017 is kind of the benchmark where this thing really started over, and those picks from 3-4 years ago are starting to contribute, but clearly we need more.

Actually, that wasn't my intention. The Sabres have rode the premise that 'hey, as long as our very first pick is successful, who cares about the rest of the draft!'

They pick their Eichel's and Reinhart's and Dahlin's and Pysyk's(!!!!!!!!!) and say (frank) IT to the rest of the draft, for (frank)ing years.
