They signed Dahlin to a mid range bridge while starting a rebuild

What suprises me slightly was the interdivision return after showing well last season.

Sounds like a deal you want and maybe a deal he doesn't want.

Maybe he does 8x8. Maybe he outright leaves after 8 years. Maybe he signs a 5x13 next. Here or elsewhere. Or maybe he signs a 3x6 today, and an 8x10 in three years. At least here you can guarantee a second contract. If he's worth his salt, he'll get one, or at the very least, it is an extremely high probability that he will.

Being pessimistic about this deal is purely a choice and has no definitive evidence that it will, as some make it sound, absolutely backfire on the Sabres. Sure it can, but history as a whole says it won't.

He’d have the opportunity to sign a full UFA contract at 29 years old, which means he’s getting two large paydays as opposed to potentially only one.

The security alone is enough for most players to want long term deals ASAP anyways

depends upon his play...people keep bringing up skunk...he had two eye-opening halves to a season...the first one was coming off of his rookie deal where he had 5 goals in the 2017 portion of the season and finished that calendar year on a 16 game goalless streak before kicking it in in 2018...

the other was his 2019-20 contract year when he finished that covid season on an eight-game pointless streak and only scored one goal and two assists in his final 15 games...

It's kinda funny how everything is management's fault in regards to Sam's contacts.

Nothing to do with really proving to be a great sabre and a guy who warrants a 8 year extension. He proved neither.

He just never really put it together. 1/2 season here....
His leadership or lack of makes him useless at this junction during tank4.
