I’m so convinced a lot of you guys are going to be upset when you see the lineup for game 1 of the season.

Unless the PTO guys play like all stars they won’t get signed.

Robertson will start off as a Marlie.

I’m guessing Ritchie will be the new top line winger and Kerfoot will play the wing on the second line.

I won’t be shocked if the third line ends up being Engvall and Mikheyev with someone like Bunting on the wing

Fourth line will be something like Spezza and Simmonds playing the wings with Kampf at C (even tho Spezza will still do a lot of the draws)

Rielly/Brodie, Muzzin/Holl, Sandin/Dermott on D

In order for it to be any different than something at least close to this the others will need to have dominant preseasons

I believe you're being glib here . . .but I honestly think they have plans for Mikheyev.

I mean if you look at how he played, he was a great penalty killer with no luck in his finish. There's a good article on PPP about it where they basically point out that his shooting percentage his dragged down by his penalty killing where some of those shots were just smart dump shots to force a faceoff deep in the zone. It might count as 0% in the shooting percentage box, but it counts a lot towards good game management. He did also have a bunch of breakaways and didn't score. Strictly based on HDCF, I'm going to say it was 6. He had 19 shots and 0 goals while Penalty Killing. The PPP article felt that he just needs to score on a couple of those this season to sort of change everything in his confidence level.

At even strength he was still the second worst shooter of any forward who managed to score a goal (so he was above Simmonds and then the no-goalers: Foligno, Robertson, Barabanov and Petan), but he also outproduced Thornton, Kerfoot and Simmonds on a Goals / 60 basis. For a guy who is an above average PK player, I'd be telling him we're not trading him either. You'd never get fair return on value compared to the value you'd get from him.

I am, yes..

Aside from his good PK skills, he doesn't add much to the lineup.. We'll see.. I think Keefe has an idea for Mikheyev

The roster I cited was $80k below the salary cap and had 13F, 6D, and 2G and it didn't include Nick Robertson. In other words they are already slim. Now that roster I cited is simply based on who you would objectively keep barring a trade because you don't want to lose anyone to waivers. Anyone else - Engvall, Mikheyev, Bunting, Kase, Kampf - they would all very likely be claimed.

If they traded Engvall, Mikheyev or Kerfoot, then Robertson could slot in - if he was ready - and he would be waiver exempt which would give us that freedom. It would suck for him, but it is what it is. In fact if they traded Kerfoot we would have the cap freedom we'd need, but we'd lose a fairly decent player.

I think the solution (if they go for the roster you mentioned) would be to put Engvall on waivers and see if anyone picks him up. If someone picks him up - he can be replaced with one of the other 4 or so bubble players (Or Robertson). If he isn't picked up, they bring him back when the injured defenseman is good to go.

Another strategy may be to put some fringe players on waivers right at the beginning of the year when others teams' rosters are essentially set, and hope they pass through. Once the player passes through waivers, they are essentially waiver exempt, and can pass through again all year.

That strategy is obviously risky.

I go for volume not a high %. Plus, I’m just about the only one who thinks Holl is useful for the $, so….
- Canada Cup

Your not the only one, I think Holl is great 'bang for the buck' and he is fine when he is playing with his usual d partner (Muzzin).

I'm also not a subscriber to the book that he is horrific without Muzzin but I do prefer to see him with the Muzzinator.

I like Holl and think he's an asset they need to keep.

Yeah, and I pick that roster out of convenience, but also there's going to be a certain loyalty to those players - especially the ones they envision a specific role for. As much as I do like elements of Engvall's game, he might be the one to go. I know there a few posters here who would do a happy dance.

I doubt that they flirt with waivers for any of the newly anointed bottom-6, but you never know.

Ideally it lets them go with 12F, 6D, 2G, and then call-up / demote Liljegren / Robertson as they need. They'd still have very limited cap flexibility, but the daily accrual of not having Engvall's $1.2M (for instance) would probably let us expand the roster sooner rather than later.

You're missing the bouncing ball on this one . . .

The only player they have who is waiver exempt is Sandin who is a defenseman.

If any defenseman who is not Sandin gets hurt, but not enough to be placed on LTIR, we won't have the cap space to bring up another defenseman (i.e., Liljegren) to replace the injured player. We would have to waive a forward in order to make room. In order to make room for Liljegren with the $80k in capspace we have available, we would need to waive someone like Bunting, Engvall, Simmonds or Kase.

Spezza doesn't make enough to get Liljegren on the team were he waived.

Pretty sure Kase gets injured putting on his skates on training camp Day 1.

Some have been speculating Willie playing 2LW which would demote Kerf to the 3rd line... until Kase breaks a toe nail and is out for 6 months.

Having said that, this team has very little flexibility. It's almost as if there's an albatross contract on the team that prevents the team from having balance... or an effective playoff performance.

I think people obsessing about Holl need to go take a look at most other teams 4th best d'men. The list won't make your knees curl ....Forbert in Boston ....Forsling in Florida ...Edmunson in Montreal ...Jensen in Washington ...Greene in NYI.

TB and a few teams have depth 1-4 but most teams get a little ? after the top 2 or 3 guys. If the Leafs could add another Bogosian type I'd like the Leafs D against most others.

Kerfoot and Nylander played extremely well together in the post season, so, even tho it’s just an opinion, it would be nothing short of foolishness to not see how much better they are when JT is on the ice with them.

I think Kase at best will be one of the extra forwards who isn’t used all that often.

OK, seriously, the Leafs have gone too far. Or at least Bieber has gone to far.

I just got an email from MLSE - I have the priveledge of entering a draw to see if I can be one of the first to buy Drew gear.

Yeah, I log in, select the stuff I want (1 item in each category per person) and then I wait until the 24th to see if I have "won" the right to purchase it.

The prices are franking scandalous.

Socks: $20

Blue trucker hat: $68

White t-shirt: $98

Blue hoodie: $238

Blue sweatpants with Carlton on the side: $238

White crew sweater (looks like a 1930s Leafs jersey): $328

And here's the franking kicker:

16" Carlton plush doll: $78

Sheet with 8 stickers for kids: $18

Yeah, I know there are suckers who will buy it. Hell, I should get one of each, because I bet I could turn a profit re-selling them.

FFS.
