What will happen with Eichel?
There’s been no surgery to repair the herniated disk in his neck, so the captain is expected to fail his physical. Since Eichel finished last season on injured reserve and enters this season with the same injury, the Sabres can place him back on injured reserve. His $10 million would count toward the salary cap because Buffalo is more than $23 million under the $81.5 million limit.
Eichel, meanwhile, can leave town and wait for a trade. His wait is heading toward the seventh-month mark. He knew shortly after his March injury that artificial disk replacement was his surgery of choice but agreed to see if rest healed the herniated disk. It didn’t, and the Sabres declined to approve disk replacement in June and want the center to have fusion surgery. Eichel is opposed because his desired surgeon said fusion could result in long-term neck problems for the 24-year-old.
So, the holding pattern remains. If the Sabres don’t get their preferred trade package, Eichel could sit injured on the sidelines all season. Understandably, Buffalo wants a significant return for the three-time All-Star. The rebuild depends on it.
But 31 teams have one idea of Eichel’s worth and one team has another. The marriage is not salvageable. Divorce is inevitable. It’s just a matter of when.

i wonder if we hear about ECHL's failure prior to GMKA presser tomorrow morning. my guess is no - SabresFaninIndiana
I wonder if they actually strip his captaincy. Pros and cons, I'm not really sure there's any pros here. You're not going to issue out a new captaincy this year anyway, and you're just further tarnishing your asset. Also coming out in the open and saying 'we don't want him anymore' which, while it is the worst kept secret, it hasn't been openly admitted to this date.

Adams overplayed his hand.
I think you get everyone’s best offer by the draft.
Will be interesting to see how this plays out. |

The options are scary:
1) The WANT to go short term with him because they're idiots
2) Dahlin doesn't want to resign long term |

Dahlin doesn't want to sign long term right now unless it's for big, big dollars. |

$6M for only 2 years would be an overpay according to Evolving Hockey, who have two years estimated at $4.2M per. |

if he comes back plays and shows he is healthy and at the pre2021 level the offers go up... right now GMs are nervous about giving too much with that looming over him |

So what's to stop Jack from going rogue, getting his preferred surgery, then hoping the Sabres terminate his contract, thus making him a FA?
There has to be more to that scenario than I know. It sounds too easy for Jack to do that and would be a win-win for him. |

The way I understand it is the Sabres could terminate his contract and they would still own his rights.
Not a CBA expert by any means but that's what I heard.
At the very least, a breach of contract dispute would probably be tied up in the court system for a while |

Yeah Jack can't win like that. They don't even need to terminate his contract. They could just suspend him indefinitely. Which would totally help his trade value. And the Sabres could claim breach of contract anyway and refuse to pay him while on IR. Oh yeah. Nasty. |

It's a high risk, $50M bet - in the event the surgery fails, going rogue means his contract would not be insured and the Sabres would not have a financial liability either. |

this whole scenario is so fitting with the way the entire pre-2015 draft saga, and immediate aftermath, unfolded |

Theoretically, the Wild could still get into the Eichel sweepstakes if so inclined even with Krill's $9m contract. Of course, Salary would need to take back some salary...candidates include:
- Goligoski $5m 1 year (age 36)
- Fiala $5.1M 1 year (age 25)
- Rask $4m 1 year (age 28)
The issue for them is Dead Cap money for the next 3 seasons after this from Parise and Sutter amounting to $12.7m, $14.7m, $14.7m. But, if BriseBois can work magic, Guerin should be able to as well. |

Eichel became the Alpha Male in that organization the minute Murray had to apologize for being so pissed that they didn't get the 1st pick for McDavid. |

Rossi and Boldy just put on a clinic at their prospect tournament.
If they were hesitant on including either one before, can’t seeing them do it now.
