If Dahlin has a really good season this year, he'd have easily gotten an 8-9 mil deal next offseason.
If Dahlin has 3 good years, he's easily getting 11-12 mil down the road when the cap rises again.
This was the worst option for the team. Probably the best for Dahlin - sbroads24
They are probably planning on offering him a long term extension after year two, if he progresses as hoped from here. Dahlin himself might not want a long term deal signed at this time with cap expected to be stagnant for a while. Everyone gets to see where the cap goes from here. |

i could see that.. especially if they are talking with interested teams and they all say they are ok with that surgery - SabresFaninIndiana
This really should of been done in the off season. If the Sabres made up their mind that they were absolutely going to trade him, what difference did it make if Jack got his preferred surgery or not?

On average, artificial disc replacement recovery time takes about 3-5 weeks; however, artificial disc replacement recovery time varies from patient to patient. Many patients can return to light activities and desk work within 1 week, but a few may not be at full activity level for up to 3 months.
winter olympics begin feb 4 - Michael Pachla
That UFC Fighter got cleared 5 1/2 months after his disc replacement, I would be amazed if he played at this point. |

Imagine someone saying that about your daughter?
I Hope she isnt fat shamed by her dad.
I think we both know the answer to that question.
You are a crybaby loser. There's a reason you see her sparingly. Good reason ☝️ - Boss34
Who? My daughter that I live with and have never not lived with?
Nice try. |

just to reiterate, you've heard that the sabres are waiting for him to fail his physical and, they'll give in and let him have disc replacement surgery, but that they're on the hook for nothing either now or somewhere down the road? |

My guess, they think the replacement has a lot higher probability of big complications. They don't see the risk as being similar. From their perspective, they don't need Jack for at least a year or two while they lose, he'll give in before long. At the point at which he recovers from fusion, he's worth a boat load again. Problem solved.
Edit: How long do we think Jack will sit before he gives in? This season? Next season too? The entire contract? |

Once he fails his physical they are not on the hook if he goes and does his surgery if he never plays a second on the ice they are not liable

From what I've read (on the interweb) it's exactly the opposite.
The reason I think they are hesitant is there is no data to support it is better for a Hockey player.
The fusion has more of a possibility for future complications from what I have read on the interweb
