played 3 years, signed for 3 more years

not 1 person cried about joker being in this situation

let it play itself out, life is too short because a crappy hockey team only signed their best player to a 3 year extension

Different situations.

Sam really never " broke thru"
He had every opportunity to be a 30 or 40 goal scorer.

Dahlin really hasnt proven 8 year deals to me either

Maybe it's the same situation?
Neither proved an eichel like contract after 3 years....

Buy low, sell high.

Not kick the can down the road and then buy high

And then you give another 1 year and another 1 year and another 1 year and then hes gone
- DirtyDan

No, I go long term with him next offseason or he accepts his qualifying offer.

Year 3 I go long term before he can arb his way to UFA or trade him.

Either way it’s the same thing as the three year deal we gave him with additional flexibility. Just hurts Terry’s pocketbook a little more but he can afford it

If the player doesn't want a long term deal then you can't sign him to a long term deal.

Can someone post a quote of Dahlin saying he doesn’t wanna sign long term?

Oh you can’t?

Oh my god, what?

Here's our options

1-2 year bridge - allows player to "prove it" allows team to evaluate, doesn't bring player to UFA or arb

3-4 year bridge - allows player to go to arb, allows player to leverage most UFA years in next negotiation to get more $$

Long term extension - provides player long term security, provides team long term security that player is signed. Has potential to be a bargain contract if player hits what they were projected to be and has looked in rookie season, and after worst coach in team history was fired.

Now what option seems the least appealing

- sbroads24

Dahlin is arb eligible after this season.

So you just argued that the 3 year deal was bad just to say your idea is practically the same but wastes more money

Nope but I can post the contact length and that is pretty self explanatory

Im sure we would have given him 10x8 if he wanted. Hell I would and I was one of the people calling him the worst players on the team earlier this year.

Same thing. You can't.

I don't find it to be great either. I think Dahlin pulled a W. But to pretend it's cataclysmic is hilarious.
- TheSabresTaco

What's a 60 point defenseman worth = $6+ million per

50 point defenseman, around 6 million per ?

Good contract, can't force them to sign

We are going to suck this year and next.

What difference does it make if Dahlin is making $2M or $20M ?

Yes, but next year doesn’t give him the option to take it to UFA.

Next year he could arb and basically force a trade with RFA years remaining

In 3 years and he basically say FU I’ll take a one year and UFA or trade me for .50 on the dollar like Reinhart because the next team has 0 assurance

covid shortened seasons is what left him short of that 30 or 40 goal season
- homiedclown

Too late by then. Samson was sick of buffalo.

Can't blame him.

Projections are difficult for any player. Especially streaky players...

I never said he wanted one, did I?

I said of the three options (1-2 years, 3 years, long term) the Sabres signed him to the worst possible option outside of 4 years right to UFA

2 different opinions.

I'm sure dahlin wanted short term.

You can buy and sell what you want, but the player still has a voice.

You really see 8 years x 8.5/9 million
That would be a huge mistake if he continues to play they way he has......

The 3 year deal is fine as long as the Sabres make a long term decision after the 2nd year of the deal.

No hoping he'll sign long term after year 3.

If he's not interested in extending long term after year 2, trade him.

Jokiharju has only played 2 seasons that count towards his UFA status.

He has 2 years left of RFA status after this 3 year deal, not one.

- kingcong39

he was on the hawk roster for their first 35 games in 18-19

then he was loaned in mid december, and came back up for 6 more games on the roster, playing in 5 more

and then a call up for a game

he was on the roster for 42 games in his rookie season

"
An Accrued Season is defined as a year in which a skater is on an NHL roster for at least 40 games (30 games for Goalies). If a player is on the NHL team's roster but injured, the team's games count towards the 40 game minimum. "

Whether we spend to the cap or just enough to get over the floor this team is finishing bottom 5 this year and next (most likely)

Having flexibility with Dahlin may have allowed us to get him done long term next year or the year after.

So yes a 1 year bridge, followed by another possible 1 year bridge is better than a 3 year bridge leading him right to arb with UFA rights
