All of the Sabres long term pieces have their contracts expiring into RFA. That is absolutely done on purpose. Honestly, a good move. |

Not a fan of the term. - kingcong39
Yeah, he is going to get a massive pay day
He is still a RFA after this contract but I would have liked a longer term deal but I get it

When his contract expires, he'll be in the same position as Reinhart this past offseason, which is not ideal.
If they want to keep him long term, I hope they work on extending him before his 3 year deal is up. |

Reinhart had two bridge deals though, one two year contract and one one year contract, which basically signified they weren't going to commit long term to him.
This is a little different |

A little different yes, however they had an opportunity to get him locked in long term under what Makar is making now.
3 years from now, Dahlin could/should be looking at the highest AAV amongst d-men in the league.
Teams that go deep in the playoffs always manage their cap space the best and have elite players making less than they are worth. |

The Sabres are probably not going to be good the next 2-3 years
If Dahlin does well he’s getting a huge contract that will kick in when the Sabres start to compete (hopefully)
They once again, whiff on getting long term value when they will need it.

I like Dahlin, but be honest here, he hasn't shown he is worthy of a long term deal here, especially not at the Makar price tag.
He has had some serious struggles, and then has shown serious flashes of brilliance, but he hasn't been able to show it consistently. I wouldn't commit long term to him at $9 million yet, and no agent would tell his client that an 8 year $7.5 million per year deal is good for him at this point when they can see his game isn't where it can be.

You derived a whole lot of opinion about my potential thoughts based on an extremely generalized and widely agreed upon opinion.
And for that, I present to you today's Beady Award - TheSabresTaco

myers got paid on potential, 7 years 38.5 mil
by year 2 everyone was turning on him and it was labeled a bad contract |

Hes been fantastic outside of Krueger era.
It’s a very modest gamble to make that he will be excellent going forward.
And like Ristolainen showed, you can totally suck for years and still get traded for value.
There was little to no risk giving him a long term extension now
But the Sabres will eventually pay for playing it conservatively |

Dahlin is arbitration eligible at the end of the contract. He could arb himself right to UFA. It’s Reinhart 2.0.
I was not being sarcastic when I say he’s going to be making double what he’s making now in 3 years, and at that point the Sabres should hopefully be in a situation where cap space utilization actually matters |

The contract is a big win for Dahlin IMO.

moving Jack may be addition by subtraction - homiedclown
Sure, if the Sabres are going to try and win this season....
If tank4 roles in, why would we want this cleared up?
Chaos = losing
Losing = winning the draft
Assets = winning now
Assets later = winning later

And he still managed to get paid by Benning a few years back.

Agreed. I'm certain someone will female dog about it, but it gives you a chance to not overpay him but to also provide a long term contract into his 30's. If he continues to progress in his overall game, his next contract needs to be max term, no questions asked. - TheSabresTaco
I wanted a long term possible value contract, but I’m fine with this. Agreed on the max term next contract. No more reinhart type debacles. |

The way they could ultimately end up paying is they end up having to trade him after this deal is up because he makes it clear he will not sign long term. |
