That sounds about right! So, to me what would have been the right call is a 2 year "show me you can do it consistently" deal at 6 mil per, if he produces, then that 3 years of play can start talking about 5 years for 45. Is that unreasonable?
- stevens87

He was using Russia as leverage. He could have gone to the KHL for a bigger bag, waited for his rights to expire in Minnesota, and then come back to the NHL as a UFA and gotten a massive contract. Yes, the contract has risk, but it was also the only way to keep him. I think there’s a pretty good chance he is, in fact, a 9 mil player, so if the options are gamble, or lose him for nothing, I think this is a pretty good gamble.

Oh I think it was a terrible deal haha. Either a bridge deal or a 8 year deal would have been the answer here. Kid is going to be 29 by the time he hits UFA and is going to cash in, somewhere else because why the (frank) would he stay in Minnesota? That place is a dumpster fire.

That is true and that is a BIG downside when drafting or signing Russian players!

Meh. Don't think it's that big of a downside. Not like it happens often.

Yeah if the guy you’ve drafted is good enough to use the KHL as leverage in any meaningful way to skip a bridge deal, that’s probably overall good news for you.

But I agree with you. The short term makes this deal unfriendly for Minnesota. It needed to be longer, assuming a bridge was completely off the table.

Yes, the types that propelled them to back to back cups...we don't want those types...

I get what you're saying to a degree here but those two players you singled out were young spark plugs that scored. You have to score to win. Jakey scored most playoff goals for a rookie, or was very close to most ever I believe, with 5 of them being game winners in the 2017 run. He's been a 40 goal scorer in this league. You can't honestly say you hope the prospects don't turn out like him, can you? hahaha

Having said all of that, not that I think they're locks to be NHL mainstays, in fact its hard to think they will be for me, but Hallander, Poulin and Legere all play a harder nosed game than Jakey.

Jake and Rust are great when things are going their way. When they aren’t they are happy to lay down and die and call it a season. Like when Islanders D men are being big meanies. 2016 was 4 years ago. Time to change the culture.

Yea and it should. If you pay them bigger when they are younger and are producing at their peak. They all wanna cash in(rightfully so) after their bridge deals and it looks bad at the end of the contract.

Thank you Toronto. Between that and the threat he could go back to Russia, Kaprisov had them over a barrel.

I think it's too much too soon myself, but what is Guerin going to do, risk letting the player the fans waited years for and leave?

Haha yeah exactly. If you're going to pay someone early, might as well be someone with that upside. Those bridge deals are disappearing quick. Unless you're in Tampa.

Yea I mean bridge deals can be useful IF you need to use them but otherwise just lock the really good players up and give the money.

DK with a pretty bleak assessment of our "prospects" from the black and gold game today. I guess that's not really news....

This pretty much sums it up.

"But the duty on this Tuesday was to cover this event and, as someone who's covered every development camp scrimmage since its inception in 2002, I've got to be blunt: I've never seen one so drab, so disappointing that not a solitary participant stood out."
