Did you actually watch him play? Seeing a few highlights doesn't count lol - Rinosaur
So, you don't think this is an overpayment at all? That this could really bite them in the butt later! |

I think the landscape has changed when it comes to RFAs at his level. Also, not ever GM of every team is in the same position. MIN isn't currently a prime destination which is why Guerin has had to pay some players. |

Bill Guerin is definitely not good at his job. No clue how he’s still employed at this point. - j.boyd919
Yea I don't think he has been either. Those buyouts we're a terrible idea. |

I agree with that but that's because of GMs giving crazy contracts to guys that haven't yet played a total of 82 NHL games. |

I honestly think this is the type of situation that's easy to dismiss as bad. He didn't inherit a great situation. Now, I'll argue some of the defense contracts he handed out didn't make life easier, but those buyouts were unavoidable. I don't think he could have even retained 50% on those players and moved them.

Players like him are not flukes the way they play. He has a dynamic that you can't luck your way into. |

Yea and it should. If you pay them bigger when they are younger and are producing at their peak. They all wanna cash in(rightfully so) after their bridge deals and it looks bad at the end of the contract. |

Three years ago, people were talking about what a steal NJ got in Nikita Gusev! |

Gusev NEVER looked like Kaprizov at the NHL level. Never.

I honestly would have just kept them. At the worst bought out just Parise and kept Suter. |

So for 9 mil a year, he should average about 45 goals and around 100 points for those 5 years right? |

I don't think you've really watched this kid play. I'm not trying to be a diack, but I just don't think you have.

Min for me at that contract is 30 goal range and 85 points. He's not gonna get 100 points 5 years straight. I don't think Sid even did that haha. |

They're not really in that position. He could have probably waited one more season on one of them, but between Kaprizov, Greenway and Fiala, he needed to make room. I just don't think the buyouts were avoidable. I think those d contracts were. I think his biggest mistake was not going full rebuild.

Yes it was! One final note:
2022-23 season - over 65.0 million cap hit for 12 players
2023-24 season - almost 52.5 million cap hit for 7 players
2024-25 season - over 42.5 million cap hit for 4 players.

He did produce though. Let me ask you this, what were your thoughts of Sid and Geno when they first got here? Like after the first few games I was like yea this is definitely it. |

Sid scored 222 points combined his first two years and Geno had a total of 191 points. That's a hell of a lot better than what Kiprizov will do combined his first two years even if you pro rate it! |

My point is that Guerin has done some stupid things this off season and one is paying a guy 9 million a year based on 55 total games! |

Probably 75-90 points per season. |

Yeah and 8.7 mill and 9.5 mill back when those contracts were signed would be more like 10 and 11 mill now.
I mean, it is possible that kid doesn't live up to 9 mill per, totally is, but he is a special player and as long as he stays healthy I think he'll be producing close to that for the duration of contract. |

That sounds about right! So, to me what would have been the right call is a 2 year "show me you can do it consistently" deal at 6 mil per, if he produces, then that 3 years of play can start talking about 5 years for 45. Is that unreasonable? |
