I'm just saying they will be tooth and nail all year for a spot. I don't see them being a "lock". Florida is much better, Boston and Tampa are very good, and Montreal just went to the Cup final. - fifty__missions
To be honest (from an outsiders point of view) the Leafs don’t look much worse if at all than last year. I think in goal it’s a bit suspect, but then again Anderson didn’t play down the stretch either.
Gone Upfront
Hyman. Impactful for sure. Great on forecheck and pick retrieval absolutely. Also had some decent touch. Replaced by a few guys really. Ritchie, Bunting, Kampf. I won’t count Kase cause he will be hurt during camp weigh-in. Also, Gabriel because he will be in and out depending who Leafs play that night or injury.
Foligno.? Not really. Played 7 games and the Leafs were cruising long before he got to the team.
Thornton. Good at the start. Kinda clicked for a bit but definitely looked like his best days have left him. Unfortunate as he was so fun to watch prime time. Maybe Top 5 passers all time.
On D - Bogosian was solid. Bad move not to find a replacement. I would be signed Demers for cheap if possible. Or Gudbranson…also would’ve signed Bozak for 3C to free up Kerfoot for Top 6 wing.
In my opinion I feel like they have more serviceable players this season vs last. I know Hyman was loved in the city and was fit sure a really hard worker that made the lines tick a bit better but I’m think a couple guys are better than one Hyman…(inappropriate joke here) |

I just added it up for fun but that line wouldn’t even be 550lbs (535lbs)
Perfect grinding line to play physical - Dozzer
Lol..
What they lack in size, hopefully the make up for in will and determination, and grace too! |

Well said, I think people are a little too upset over losing Hyman. Is he good? Yes. Great? No. Tbh at his age landing that contract in Edmonton is going to eventually anger the oilers fans as I’m willing to be injuries are going to start happening to a player like him in the next year or two. So as I said he’s a good player but I also believe the contract he landed is an overpayment

Additionally, he didn't help the Leafs win a Cup and he was allowed to walk to UFA for no assets back. Just sayin'.
(and before you say he wouldn't get much in return, think about the deal Edmonton gave him and then think of what the return could've been last summer...at least a decent D man to cover Holl's spot? ) |

But that’s why Edmonton gave him that…. Because he didn’t cost anything to offer a contract to.
If the Oilers needed to trade for him it likely would have been done with a cheaper, less term, contract for him.
Five and a half million til he’s thirty six?!?!?! What a terrible choice made by Edmonton |

Saying Tampa, Toronto, Boston, and Florida make it - Dozzer
Agreed.
But I think Boston might actually be due to drop a bit now. Rask is out long term, no?
So I can see 3 teams from the division make it (both wild cards from the Metro), and Boston just missing. |

In the same vein, you could argue that Toronto could also just miss. |

Holland is putting all his chips in on Hyman, Nurse, etc in the short term while they have McJesus locked up. The last couple years don’t matter to him if he can lower the AAV in the short term and get more. He’ll be long gone |

What we've learned from last year's results is the Habs are top contenders and the Leafs are a bubble team. |

I may be wrong but I completely don’t remember anyone saying we should trade Hyman last year. Can you do retroactive trades? |

Sure, Tampa missed in 17, and Boston missed in 15 and 16. The margins are tight even for contenders. |

Agreed. My original point was in response to a poster who said the Leafs are a "lock" for the playoffs. I don't see it that way at all. |
