I figured this would happen…. I’m highly doubting the people who manage the NHLPA will fight this as well

It was a joint announcement with the PA and was jointly developed. The League needed PA approval.

Don't they have a full week?
Not until sat or early Sunday?
Or was it last friday he agreed to it?
If so, then i would think they have up until midnight? No?

Disagree. Move Matthews, his entire cap hit with it, get a poop ton of picks back and bump JT up to the line he’s being paid to play on.

That way the leafs will still be good but be able to re-establish an extremely talented prospect pile as well.

If I said this, I would be pilloried.

You are right, maybe not this year, but definitely next. As much as people think it is absurd that we are, in effect, rebuilding I think there are a couple important points.

This core has now shown they not are even close to being contenders. There has been zero progression come playoff time. The flat cap makes it impossible to improve the core significantly. The last two off-seasons have been shuffling the deck chairs and dumpster-diving UFA's. Imagine how successful that would look if Spezza had not been such an awesome value.

Matthews is going to test free agency unless the Leafs offer up close to a max deal. They can't afford to do this and do they even want to for a guy who is not even close to reproducing his regular season numbers in the playoffs. As a UFA, he might become the first max-dollars free agent. Why would he stay or offer any discount. He is going to a big US market, book it.

2 years later, McDavid is going to be in the same boat. I think there is a good chance he goes to UFA and the Leafs have a legit shot, but not if they signed Matthews for huge $.

So, if they don't move him now (and of course they won't), then they really need to think about it if this season is another inexcusable failure.

It's so leafy that the #1 centre the leafs have been looking for since Sundin left is too good for the leafs

And as I said he’s going to set the price and there’s not a single team in the league that won’t pay it. So he’ll move to the home country. Just wait and see.

I think the really Leafy thing is that the pandemic hit and flattened the cap for all the years when those contracts could have become decent value. The Leafs were, probably, the team most affected by the timing of the pandemic.

That is the Leafiest thing ever.

He is easily the most talented player the Leafs have ever had. Regular season, the guy is awesome. People bend over backwards to excuse the poor playoff performances. At some point we may need to accept that he is to be blamed for his own failure.

I’m done talking about Matthews with any of you.

If you think he’s going to stick around you’re fools. Period.

And Marner isn’t tradeable without retaining salary so DON’T (frank)ING MOVE HIM

If this team fails again, all options are on the table.

If you are trading Matthews, fine, but we might as well do a full blow up then.

Retain 50% on Matthews and get a true kings ransom, then do the same thing with Marner and Nylander. (or retain 50% on Tavares if he is willing to waive and retain nothing on Nylander)

No point trading Matthews and then watching the rest of this team struggle to even make the playoffs until Marner/Nylander/Tavares are free agents.

AM is the most talented player the Leafs have ever had.
People need to accept that he has not performed in the playoffs and with the team enjoying no success, what is the motivation to stay in Toronto. Why is it so tough to believe that he would rather be in a big US city?

Obviously it depends on the return, but I don't think a full rebuild is necessary. On the other hand, it is tough to imagine anything other than a serious overhaul if they let Reilly walk for nothing and then deal Matthews.

They basically have one more shot and then they need to change direction. They have done very poorly with asset management because they believed the time to win was now. I already believe they have been criminally stupid, but they are going to try for one more season. I guess in for a penny, in for a pound.

The motivation to stay in Toronto is familiarity, massive hockey market he's essentially a celebrity in that's tied to unparalleled endorsement cash.

The guy is hanging out with Beiber and its not cause he plays for some poope American market he wouldn't be recognized walking down the street in.

Why is it so tough to believe he would want to stay in Toronto? Blake Wheeler stays in Winnipeg ffs. 😂

why deal buston glassthews instead of greedy willi and b!tch marner?🤦🏿‍♂️

glassthews is better than either of these panty waists and, with the cap space dubass could afford some grown men (forward and d) who can handle themselves and their teammates on the ice👍

Twitter has taught me that only 20% of people will catch Covid, and that there is a 99.8% survival rate.

So 328,000,000 * .2 *.002 = 131,200 deaths in the U.S.

I am sure the families of the other 500,000+ dead people are relieved to hear those anti-vax statistics.
