Replacing Leddy to me is MUCH more important then adding another fwd. if the plan is replacing Leddy with Aho I can’t say that I agree with it. I don’t think that’s the plan.

Any thoughts on whether Pulock tests the market next offseason?

I doubt it, this group is so close they are all taking less to play this thing out, especially with the new Arena!

I would assume the extension will happen during the season, but if he is still unsigned by the summer then he is taking the money, especially what defensemen are getting paid now....best guess at least 7.5m?

Not exactly cap circumvention, but yes...he'll be going on LTIR for an extra $6M cushion

But they have to sign/acquire a d-man, so shedding some or all of Komarov/Panik/Johnston/Hickey seems likely

Its only cap circumvention when it's another team is doing it. When "my" team does something...totally legit.

A 4 year deal for Palms at 5m, on the back of two extremely lackluster seasons in a row. Ballsy move by LL.

I only consider it circumvention if the LTIR is used as "free" cap space. Now if the Islanders drop salary before the season starts then I don't see a problem. Either way the fancy loophole needs to be fixed next CBA or they might as well drop the salary cap all together.
- Glak18

Well that's the entire point of LTIR though.

This isn't a situation where Boychuk will make a triumphant comeback for the playoffs and be a huge addition after not costing them a dime all season long. His career is legitimately over and he's legitimately injured. It's also not acquiring an essentially-retired Brent Seabrook to get "free" cap space.

This is using LTIR for exactly what it was created for. You only get the LTIR cushion in the amount that the injured player puts you over the cap. If the Isles were $7M under the cap, they'd get exactly zero dollars in cushion from Boychuk's deal. If the Isles were $5M under the cap, they'd only get $1M in overage. Spending as close to the cap upper limit as possible is the way to maximize the LTIR overage benefit.

I wouldn't call this blatantly abusing loopholes using LTIR. His career is over, he's injured, and he's not going to retire and just give up the $4M the Islanders owe him for this season. This isn't even remotely close to "circumventing" anything.

FWIW, Pulock wore Islanders' pajamas when he was a kid (really). So I think he stays.

His game was off. The goals came at seemingly worthless times when games were far out of reach an the other team was all but asleep. Last season he was straight up atrocious, even though he did have a solid playoff run. Like my original post says, it is ballsy. It is a gamble to see which player shows up for 82 games next season. I'm a big palms fan, so certainly no dogging the guy. I just think a 4 year deal is 2 years too many.

Yeah everybody outside of the player would love shorter term but that's not how it works when it comes to UFA's. Every team is in the same boat when it comes to too many years on deals. That's the nature of the business. As far as saying every goal he scored was worthless and it was because the other team was sleeping is laughable. Dismissing 25 goals in 65 games as lucky or just garbage time goals is absurd. He deserves a little more credit then that you would think, No?

I can somewhat agree, but for contracts that are in the back half and overpaid its a bit to easy to eat the salary and have the Dr sign off on it. Boychuck came back and played in the Poffs, but then his eye injury was suddenly too bad to continue? Add to it that Lou has history of using this in the past i think the fans have a right to be skeptical. I think some of the litmus paper test is if the team is better off by having the player on the LTIR than if the player was healthy and in the line up. Lous moves seems to lean towards the being better off having the player on the LTIR.

Yep. Let’s just gut the team that’s made it to the conference final 2 years in a row. Brilliant.
