Not of all time , and this is obviously a conversation piece , but top ten for sure . You are certainly correct about the fact that Philly and Edmonton had no business being in the playoffs let alone finals of the playoffs without him .

Hilarious how (frank)en stupid most of you are, throwing around names of players you think are better than Pronger. He’s a top 10 all timer without any doubt. Possibly top 5, maybe even top 3.

To through out names like Duncan Keith, and Scott Stevens and to be expected to be taken seriously is retarded. Grow the (frank) up.

Likely top 2, potentially top 1, considering putting him in his own ranking by himself because he's that phenomenal..

But seriously, if Pronger is in your top 5 you either a) just started watching hockey in the last 15 years, or b) only can name 5 NHL Defensemen.

He's been mentioned. I'd have him in my top 6 for Dmen since 1970. These are my pairings:

He's up there for sure. I'd say It's him or Orr. But saying Orr didn't play in his own end. People had the same criticism of Erik Karlsson, and it was never that he couldn't play in his own end. It was that he was so good that he didn't have too, so I'm not sure that's a fair point to make.

Where I would say a compelling argument for Orr being the best of all time. Is that he simply dominated games. It was his game on the ice and everyone else was just kind of there. No one has gotten to that level.

It's also quite hard to compare different decades.

I do think they should give the Norris to the best D and create a new Orr trophy for the most offensive D

Karlsson doesn’t even know where his own end is.

Pronger is in top 10 no question and more than likely in the top 5 conversation. Top/best of all time? This gets really subjective...

Nik Lidstrom, Bobby Orr, Ray Bourque, Rod Langway, Scott Stevens, Paul Coffey, Larry Robinson, Mark Howe, Chris Pronger and Brian Leetch are the best/greatest in my lifetime and they all have different facets to their game that are either superior or lacking.

Lidstrom, Orr, Bourque, Coffey, Howe and Leetch did not physically intimidate.

Pronger, Stevens, Langway and Robinson were not puck carriers.

Coffey was not as sound defensively.

Howe didn't have as long a career on top.

If you are really saying ALL TIME, there are a lot of great defensemen who are not even mentioned. Again, this is a very subjective question.

I'm going to go by my lifetime which will be 45 years in October but I'd say the best all-around were Nicklas Lidstrom, Scott niedermayer, Scott Stevens then maybe Chris Pronger. Edit I'm going to throw Paul Coffey in here. Leading the team in penalty minutes sounds great on paper but it means he handicapped his team more often than not. Those aren't all fighting minutes. Again I said my lifetime so anyone before 1985 I left off the list because I never got to see them play all I've seen are the highlights that would make anyone say someone is great but you could say that about any AHL player if you look at only the highlights

I’ve seen a lot of bad takes on this site over the years. This might be the absolute worst one ever.
