Thinking about the Sabres lately.
Looks like the rebuild around Eichel, Ristolainen and Sam Reinhardt failed, whatever, so did the Oilers build around Hall, Eberle, Nuge and Yakupov.

Starting to think the scorched earth thing simply doesn’t work unless the timing is perfect and you already have a deep pool of slowly developed prospects.
I mean, can you think of any examples where it totally did work?

You got it on Amazon Prime, I take it? 14 bucks is a steal for any book these days. But it's an eye-opening read. His style of writing is captivating - it's not academic and boring like a lot of texts on History are.

Obviously but that in itself was another rebuild. By that time we had some prospects developing. Also safe to say that hasn’t exactly worked out either

Honestly, I don't think any team that's blatantly done it has ever really gotten anywhere. I don't think Pittsburgh or Chicago actually did in the early 2000's - they really just sucked that bad. Pittsburgh almost relocated, FFS. I'm not even sure it's worked in the NBA/NFL, either. Suck for Luck got Indy nowhere, and Cleveland was terrible before drafting LeBron anyway, and it took him leaving and coming back to play with basically the team they built off trading him to Miami... So I would say it's a resounding 'no'.

I have to say too, I meant at the beginning of the conflict, only the UN invaded to defend South Korea - and that was 90% U.S. Troops, and Mainland China only got involved once they feared a U.S. invasion of China, and rightfully so because General MacArthur was a mad man who wanted to use Nuclear Weapons and likely sought to invade China after the Korean conflict had ended.
- Jet Jaguar BD

Yes, the Chinese got involved when we crossed the 38th parallel at the beginning of the war, well, a few months after it started, and Kim freaked out and begged them for help.

the simple fact is that there is so much to afghanistan dating back to the soviets, the UK (durham line) and well, well before that going back thousands of years...they don't take kindly to foreigners on their land and have more will to defend their beliefs than any layman in the U.S. could hope to understand
- Michael Pachla

This is not totally true. There are a wide spectrum of Afghans with varying beliefs. The ones I got to know held Americans and the US in general in very high regard, almost degraded themselves, and elevated us to a higher level. Many have hopes of coming here for their next degree. Some who are desperate for their lives now have been contacting me trying to see if I can help them now that they have lost their country to the Taliban. The problem with many Americans is they see Afghans and the Taliban as one and the Taliban is 60,000 people give or take.

Many Muslims I spoke to were like Christians here. Devout to their parents but really on the fence or didn't believe at all but just put on a show to keep their parents happy. Many of these were females who opened up to me and said they weren't the only ones like this. The problem is you can't pinpoint them and generalize what they think and believe.

You make a very good point and I concede that tanking has never guaranteed a championship but the logic is still sound when it comes to the theory of tanking.

Like I said, Westerners do not truly understand Islam. I'm using the wrong terminology, and more mean to emphasize the ideology behind all three of the Taliban, the Islamic State and al-Qaeda - they are but three groups struggling for the same control of all of Islam under one unification of all the Islamic Tribes under the premise that Western Culture is a threat to Islam as a whole.

Islamic State was, in fact, founded by Taliban deserters.

It's pretty obvious you don't have a freaking clue what you're talking about. Some of us spent years of our life in Afghanistan. Some of us worked at a very high level. Please go back and tell Howard Zinn to write another book so you can continue to write sentences with no context.

Hahaha okay buddy way to prove me wrong. I even admitted to a fault in my use of terminology. Instead of engaging in discourse, you attack a person with anger and not discussion.

But here is a cool link I found you might also find informative. I always loved the whole "I was there and you don't know crap" argument. PTSD much?

Again, you continually link things that have nothing to with one another, then say "tribalism" and pretend to make a point. You've literally spread disinformation about the Taliban, AQ, and IS and then start preaching about a book that hasn't been relevant in 2 decades. And has nothing to do with Afghans.

Cowardice and endemic corruption on the Afghan side and absolute apathy about the 30,000 foot mission from the American/NATO side is what happened for 20 years. You may also add to it the total failure of the "expert class" who come out of our military academies and elite universities, and then fill out the diplomatic corp and officer Corp of the US forces. All of their cultural sensitivity and endless meetings to eat fresh slaughtered goat with your right hand added up to bumpkiss.
There has only ever been one way to deal with groups like this: you exterminate them or you lose. Plain and simple.

The Taliban was never lacking in courage, patience, or refuge in Pakistan. This was as inevitable as the tide, and not only did I predict it 7 years ago in a BN column, thousands of people have predicted it. The SIGAR report has been open and available for years.

The 300,000 strong force was always ghost soldiers and we all knew it. We all knew they were illiterate drug addicts, but paid and trained them. We all knew they had zero logistical support capability, but continued to provide it as a crutch for them. As I said, we all knew this was coming.

As far as I'm concerned the only thing Joe Biden has done wrong on this issue is not leave by May 2nd as the Don had arranged. Every second of a delay allows a tragedy to happen that could draw the United States back in. Joe needs to keep an iron Constitution and whether all the criticism he's going to get this week keep us out for good.

I mean, you are why we can't have discussions in here. Very high ranking, cool story bro. I've had friendsnin the war - All the prostitution we created in Afghanistan? The war crimes comitted by our soldiers? Theres a fellow few posts above you - that's how you talk about things.

I literally said Westerners don't understand Islam, then further said I know less than I do know and know that most of bgg us don't know - why repeat that to me as if you are so well informed?

Instead of blowing up at 4am on a hockey blog, maybe cull those demons somewhere else? Take it out on your government, not me. Very high ranking official, indeed.

Who blew up anywhere? My day starts early, Junior. And I said some of us worked at a very high level. High-ranking official are words I never used. I can tell you I was one of two advisors to the director-general of the Afghan Customs Department a fella who is now, or was I should say, a deputy defense minister. In fact, he's probably dead right now or out of the country.

But, I'm glad you have friends who were there. If they did anything above a tactical level I'll guarantee you they knew this collapse was coming too.
