I agree that Goodrow was an overpayment. I don't think his buyout numbers are that bad though.

It's clear Drury has a plan. He wants to bring in proven Stanley Cup winners and gritty players, and Blais and Goodrow are both so he's essentially checking two boxes off at the same time with each. He was willing to pay a bit of a premium to get that to happen.

Goodrow's contract is what happens when you acquire a guy like that through free agency. It happens every single year where a bottom 6 guy with good playoff experience gets overpaid. That's why I actually like the Buch trade more than others, because we were able to get Blais as a cost-controlled asset. Just adding Goodrow alone wasn't enough to really change the identity of the Rangers bottom 6, so if we didn't get Blais via trade, I could've seen them signing another bottom 6er like Cizikas to a contract pushing 4mm per year as well.

I think the Rangers can live with 1 Goodrow contract on the books, but a second one in the same offseason would be tough.

signing Sherkterin for almost 6 mill with 42 NHL games is a MASSIVE roll of the dice. ( I am not saying he sucks)

Drury using Larry Brooks to try and get eichel for pennies is funny.

The rangers also have major cap issues with Zibs coming up. That Trouba contract is ugly.

Honestly, Buch is a bit overrated.

Prior to the most recent season, he was our most inconsistent forward next to Kreider. He would be the best player on the ice for 3 or 4 games and then invisible for the next 10.

Last year was his most consistent season, but it was a short season, and I can see him regressing back to his inconsistent ways.

I also like a lot about what I'm reading on Blais. Seems like the exact type of player the Rangers needed, along with Goodrow.

That trade and signing helped add a new dimension to the Rangers that they desperately needed.

Yeah, idk if they only have 1 Goodrow though. With the emergence of Fox, Trouba's value is going to start to decline imo. He's not great at defense. and rocking a 8M cap hit. yikes.

We'll see. His plan is to be a more balanced team, with players that serve different roles and provide different elements.

Between Panarin/Zib/Buch/Kakko/Kravstov/Laf/Howden/Strome/Chytil, we had 9 soft players who all just like to pass the puck around and never throw a hit. That's 75% of our forwards last year.

This upcoming year's roster is more balanced, has some guys that will throw hits every chance they get, and can play specific roles.


I think there have been some failed rebuilds by teams like Edmonton and Toronto that prioritized stacking their roster with just young skill players that play soft as a result of the nature of their game, and they haven't been able to get out of the first round.

Then you look at a team like the Islanders that surrounded their youth with gritty veterans like Martin, Clutterbuck, and Cizikas, and they have had great success with their rebuild.

I think Drury is trying to have a roster that resembles the Islanders in terms of balance and types of players on it.
