Jesse Marshall put up an article comparing McGinn to Tanev and it's some great work. I think that Hextall actually made the best of a bad situation. McGinn and Tanev are similar in many ways, but it really looks like McGinn may be the better more versatile player for less money than Tanev.

Well that's technically true. Tanev was taking the expansion draft with no return for the Pens; that's losing him for nothing.

Hextall just looks to have replaced him for less money and possibly a more useful player.
