My view is this. Many are looking at his cap hit for what is considered a top pairing all situations RH Dman and comparing it to what Jones and Hamilton got. I get that. My point is that cap hit for a player that Ellis is right now, is cheap. You'd pay a lot more in cap hit for a player of Ellis' caliber on the open market. That's a player you keep! Not trade. I also look at the return. Although I'm high on Myers, he is still young and unproven. Add in Patrick. They couldn't do better on the return for a top pair RH all situations defenseman with a great cap hit and cost controlled for 6 more years? Something doesn't add up.

I agree with what you said but once you add in his age, term of contract and where the Preds are heading it makes complete sense on both sides. No way Preds want 3 D men with over a 6 mil cap hit on long term contracts, all the while the are doing a rebuild and all three 32 plus years old

just a great situational trade for both teams

Why do you think Nashville made this deal? I have no doubt that the Flyers got a really good player. For now.
- MJL

Everyone seems to be forgetting this trade was made right before the expansion draft. It was ALL about them being able to protect another defenseman - they would have lost a really good player without the trade.

In that case, you don't trade the top pair all situations RH defenseman. You trade the lesser guys.

great read

This is great..

It reminds me of a musician I used to play with, a top name bass player who taught young musicians how to take care of themselves on the road and he conducts himself as a professional in his craft, dealing with other musicians and the public.

How does one get to play in the alumni fantasy camp?
- MrPerfect316

Registration is probably on Flyers or Alumni website.
My guess is its in the $3,000-$4,000 price range with lodging and meals.
I used to do the camp with HOF'ers long ago in the past at Lake Placid and Les Quatres Glace outside Montreal.

OOPS HIT THE FLAG

They like Ekholm, assume his size has something to do with, also we don't know there pipeline and there needs. They could have been focused on Myers and I am sure the Flyers wanted Ellis, just a good fit both ways

Ekholm is not the player that Ellis is right now. I think who they really like is Fabbro.

sure but one had to go and Ellis made the best option to make the Flyers.

Carrier and Allard are two RHD they've been developing in house who are ready for more time. Fabbro slides up into Ellis' spot, who they're very, very high on.

The idea that Myers, Glass, and the cap flexibility they got from dealing Ryan Ellis was lackluster value for what is perceived as a top pairing dman is silly.

The Preds dealt Ellis because they felt he was a luxury they could afford to lose. It isn't anymore complicated than that.

I meant from Nashville's perspective. Trading Ellis enabled them to protect Ekholm or someone else. Everyone was questioning Nashville's motivation.

No he wasn’t the issue. But with Nashville picking it up later in the season and with Josi still on the backend they were able to acquire two younger pieces. Good trade for both clubs. Right now better for us. If and big if. Both younger players live up to their previous hype Nashville could be viewed as the winners years down the road. Major ifs though.

I've seen cap considerations dismissed here, but...

News about Shea Weber's injury (and possible retirement due to it) was out there at the time of the trade. I had read Nashville may have wanted to clear space because if Weber were to retire, they're looking at a recapture penalty from his contract.

If Weber retires he doesnt get any more money. He can stay on LTIR for years, similar to pronger

I get that... but when the word "retirement" was used in the reporting, I'd have to imagine some buttholes puckered in Nashville.

EDIT: Let's also remember that contract was front-loaded, with $110 million guaranteed. Should Weber choose to walk away, it's not like he's leaving the majority of that contract on the table.

You have to take everything you read with a grain of salt and always consider sources but I've read reports that he has shown decline. Why did Nashville make the deal?
- MJL

Ask the GM.

One reason is they probably know at some point that contract will be a contract that has diminishing returns. Real simple. Rather get out 1 year earlier than 1 year late.

There could also be other reasons not specific to one.

Why did the rangers trade a muhc better player in Buchnevch for a 4th line fwd and 2nd rd pick? Do they know something "we" don't?

Says who you? Do you know what if any the other offers were?

Probably had better offers and he decided to take a lesser one. Pure sabotage is my guess.
