What were Mikita and Hull's first contract? Something like $12k... I think Mikita got a raise to $20k after he was good. - rpeters01
Keep in mind in 1960 $12,000 had similar value as $110,000 today. The average wage in 1960 was about $7-10K a year. So it wasn’t terrible. Owners still made a bundle on the backs of the players then
I think it was Gordie Howe who got a Red Wing jacket as a signing bonus in the mid 40s |

anyone have any good smoker recipes? Ive done
Beer can chicken
brisket
ribs
pork tenderloin
beef tenderloin
turkey
Haven't done a pork shoulder. Sharkos ruined pulled pork for me a few years back.... - SteveRain
Salmon and chicken wings are really good ones that’s don’t require an all day commitment. This time of year when home grown tomatoes are in abundance, I like to smoke halved tomatoes and then make a smoked tomato vinaigrette that’s good on almost anything. |

A buddy is coming over tomorrow with some trout he caught yesterday. Maybe I’ll put them on the smoker? |

Sure. You’ll want to cure them first, but if the trout filets aren’t huge, it should only take a couple two, or tree hours.

I keep my cure a little more simple than theirs, but the process is the same. |

I do a ton of smoking, Pork Shoulder is actually really easy. Host smoking fish is quick, easy and tasty too, though you have to be careful which wood you use or the smoke can overpower the fish.
How did Sharkos ruin it for you? or is that not Hockey talk. |

Torres got us a world series, can't fault him for the trade. Fault was trading Torres for nothing long term when they didn't resign Chapman. - rpeters01
Yup. The point was he didnt draft enough impact hitters. He did, he just gave them away without enough return, or long term return. Soler has produced some numbers but also been hurt a lot. Same with Eloy, there have been rumblings that the Cubs felt he would remain injury prone, especially if he had to play a position. It was still an overpay to send Cease and Eloy to the Sox for Quintana.
Turning back to Hockey to appease those who want only Hockey talk, its easy to focus on individual trades in a vacuum and ignore the reasons for them, the market at the time, the cap, and all the other factors at the time. Hindsight is 20/20 and it is sometimes comical to read the windsocking on this board from some who laud a trade when it happens, and then lambaste it when it doesn't quite turn out. |

My second balcony season ticket in the old building in the 80's was only $7, it was only $20 the last year of Chicago Stadium when they moved to the UC. THe explosion in salaries and franchise values is exponential. My 100 level seat was $75 in 2010, its now $255. |

Fleury: "I'm very fortunate that Stan gave me some time to reflect on what I wanted to do... I've talked to a bunch of guys and I keep hearing a bunch of great things."
Ben Pope
Fleury says he took a few days to think things through, and it "was good."
Says he talked to Cam Ward, who went through a very similar situation finishing his goaltending career in Chicago, for advice.
Marc-Andre Fleury reflecting on his Golden Knights tenure:
"Coming to Vegas, I didn't know if people were going to like hockey... From that first season, our arena was always full, our practice rink was always full... I've been very fortunate to spend four years there." |

Marc-Andre Fleury on being teammates with Patrick Kane: "I'm looking forward to it. Kane is one of the guys that has given me the most trouble in shootouts." #Blackhawks
Marc-Andre Fleury on how he found out about trade: "My agent gave me a call, told me it was out on Twitter that I was traded. That’s how I found out. I don’t have social media, so I’m not on there looking things up. He knows that, that's why he gave me a call." #Blackhawks
Marc-Andre Fleury: "I never had anything against Chicago, the organization. It was just me personally, what I wanted to do. I’ve talked to a bunch of guys, I keep hearing so many great things about the team." #Blackhawks
Marc-Andre Fleury: "I thought Stan [Bowman] did a great job to gain some players over the summer, try to make this team competitive right away and that’s also very appealing." #Blackhawks

I just started resting mine about 20 minutes ago. I'll get skewered for this, but I used the "Texas crutch" to finish a bit quicker. Still turns out great, but the bark doesn't stay as crunchy. |

I'm sure it is 98% as good as Ogi's.
And better than Paulie's. |

Goalie equipment is way bigger and lighter too. Compare a pic of a current tenders equipment to Dryden, Esposito, Belfour, Bannerman, or any goalie of gretzkys era - TheTrob

Theo i wonder if the nhl will implement a rule regarding making the goalie equipment smaller to increase scoring around the league? Imo the goalie pads and glove are way to big. |

scoring race....I agree.
Rest.....in today's game the gape between skill set of the best vs worst is a lot closer than it was in 50-60 years ago. that's my point to this. McDavid can fly....do we think he can skate around by himself with the puck and kill an entire penalty? Doubtful.
Just like I don't think Gretzky could come close to hitting 92 goals in today's game...why? Players and goalies are better.
Now if we put McDavid or McKinnon or makar or Ovechkin or Crosby back in the 70s or 80s do they produce at a higher clip? I bet they do. - SteveRain
Its a completely different game today than the 1970's but how's this for what Orr accomplished in a (too short) career as a defenceman:
Started playing OHA Jr for Oshawa as a 14 year old.
9 NHL Hat Tricks
1st Dman to score 40 goals in a season
1st Dman with 100+ assists
Only Dman to win the Art Ross scoring title.
8 consecutive Norris Trophies
Won the Norris, Hart, Art Ross and Conn Smythe trophies in the same season.
No way to compare eras, but Orr would have been a star in any decade.
And if the medical treatment of 2021 was available for his knee, he may have played 18-20 seasons. Who knows how close to Gretzky's numbers he would have gotten to.

They tried with the goalie pads and the size of the Jerseys. They got some minor alterations but the goalies and the players association are against it because of safety. |
