Would you take 7-7.5 if someone offered you 8-8.5?
- PatC80

Depending on the circumstances - maybe. But that's me personally, which is pretty irrelevant.

Players take discounts all the time. I'm not saying Rielly will - I'm saying I think the Leafs offer to him will max out at around 7-7.5 per year, and he will have to decide if that is enough for him if he wants to stay.

Same TOI per game as Werenski, Ekblad, Gio, Hedman etc. last 3 seasons.

Can’t see him taking munch of a discount.

If Rielly gets to free agency, he's not staying here..

Crazy how things work out huh?
- Scabeh

🤷🏻‍♂️

It’s the way it’s been for a while now...everybody gets all excited about term when most of the time it doesn’t really matter. The odd time a team gets stuck and then they trade them to Arizona.

Hyman didn't take a discount and everyone thought he would. Marner didn't take a discount and everyone thought he would..

If Rielly gets to free agency, we've lost him for nothing

Listen, I like Reilly but the last two seasons I believe we've seen him regress. He did have a good first round in the playoffs but that was it. I don't think we've seen him match the effort he put forth the year he was in the running for the Norris (3 years ago now?).

If he wants anything more than 6-6.5 with term then I think it's time to move on. Either trade him away for draft picks/prospects or a dman signed to a reasonable deal or take that money and try and sign some form or replacement and piecemeal the d together.

Rielly's going to get paid.

Leafs fans have a year to accept this.

But oh Lordy, he's going to get paid.

- Atomic Wedgie

He's absolutely going to get paid. I find myself agreeing that situationally any team that pays Morgan Rielly the way teams paid Hamilton (9), Werenski (9.6), Heiskanen (8.5), Makar (9), Pietrangelo (8.8) or even Josi (9.1) are making a mistake.

Some recent comparables are probably Cabot (8), Trouba (8), Spurgeon (7.6) or even Carlson (8) - some of those go back a few years, but it seems to bracket an incomplete top-pair offensive defenseman's price range.

The next tier down is where Santo argues, and it's not an unfair position to consider that these guys might be in-line with Rielly: Petry (6.25), Krug (6.5), Brodin (6), Provorov (6.75), Faulk (6.5) . . . they are all excellent players, but they are all flawed in some capacity of their game. Rielly fits into this bucket, or the tier above.

He seems like a pretty good 7.5m candidate.

Hyman said he'd take a discount to stay ...Leafs just didn't have a good enough discount offer.

Marner - nobody said that. His agent said they wanted FMV from day 1 and they squeezed until the fruit had nothing left to give.

Rielly - I'm pretty sure he was quoted as saying he'd take a discount to stay.

The problem with looking back is that everyone has a different view on what a discount looks like.

All of that said ...if we've got concerns about Rielly defensively ..and if we've got concerns about Rielly's PP QB ability ...why the (frank) would we consider locking him up for big money anyway.

Get creative Dubie and move on.

Every athlete in every sport always says this.

A lot of athletes truly are willing to take a "discount" to stay with their team.

The issue is that fans confuse a "discount" with a "Team friendly deal".

I agree. If he wants more than that, and the Leafs probably know what he wants already, they should look to trade him now

You're not wrong. McDavid's $12.5m is a apparently a discount and team-friendly contract.

Agreed.

One would hope that Dubas has had some - or is planning some - preliminary talks with Rielly to feel him out*.

* yes, I know, phrasing, but we all know Dubas likes to bend over, right CC?

Marner and Matthews didn't ..amirite?!

But of course they all say that but of course a lot of them mean it. I'd take a little less if it meant keeping Mrs. Lawsie and the kids happy. Cash is king but sometimes the other stuff has value too.
