Well that's certainly the comparable the Leafs would use.

His agent will probably point to Werenski.

The truth being probably in the middle, no?

- Scabeh

And the middle of Werenski and Krug is... 8M(ish). So yeah, that's probably close to where it will land.

He doesn't pk, he is not an all situations D man.

Krug is the comparable.

8x6.25M is the dream, just give him PK's cap hit RS.

- Santo_44

Dream on. Keep trying to justify our unworkable cap situation. btw, did we get Landeskog yet?

Well I struggle to see why fans are throwing the fact he doesn't PK out the window...I point to Krug because he has the same type of game.

Werenski, Nurse, Jones all are horses. They play in every situation in every game.

Rielly doesn't PK and Muzzin and Brodie hop over the boards in the final min of a game. I see no reason why Rielly can get anything over 6.5M-7M on the open market. He is simply not as good as those guys.

What does Rielly do that Krug doesn't that warrants him to be paid more?

Werenski and Rielly are completely different players.

Krug is a great comparable. Rielly should come in at a similar number - But he likely won't.

Krug signed during the most uncertain offseason in recent history. I think that lowered his value.

Also, the market has changed since then. Top pairing defenseman are getting paid big right now.

- Leafs43

Sure, ones that play in all situations and are used when defending a lead.

The market shifts, my friend.

As was mentioned earlier, Krug signed his deal when there was market uncertainty. This summer we've seen absolutely absurd contracts handed out and thus the AAV for #1 d-man continues its inevitable march north. Imagine where we'll be in a year's time?

Having said that, I don't think Werenski and Rielly are necessarily "completely different" players though they may be deployed differently by their respective teams. Suffice it to say, they play comparable minutes and, while I don't think Rielly hits Werenski's price point, I think a deal worth 8M (which would be 1.6M(ish) less than Zach) is likely for 21/22.

I don't see how this is a controversial opinion.

Seriously, I overestimated the effect of the flat cap on how team would spend.

GM's are back to throwing insane money everywhere.

Rielly's going to get paid.

Leafs fans have a year to accept this.

But oh Lordy, he's going to get paid.

7 million x 8 years would be his "home town discount" I think.

Hyman got paid, he didn't take a "hometown" discount.. Rielly is gonna get paid..
I think he will ask for, and probably get $8-8.5M per season

If that is really what he wants, the Leafs need to trade him now

That seems like the low end in my opinion..

I would be surprised if he re-signs here for under $8M per

A lot of 'Josh Anderson' type deals were done.. Meaning, that they won't age well..

Meh, LTIR seems to take care of a majority of contracts that don’t age well.

Marner’s hometown discount was bending Dubas over and letting his agent join in for the DP.

If Rielly stays, I think he has to take something around 7. Maybe 7.5 would work.

If he wants the most $$$ he can get - he can definitely get more elsewhere.

Would you take 7-7.5 if someone offered you 8-8.5?

Same TOI per game as Werenski, Ekblad, Gio, Hedman etc. last 3 seasons.

Can’t see him taking munch of a discount.
