AV went with provy on the pp over Ghost. I don’t trust them to make logical decisions with regards to pp personnel.
- Shrike

That was because Ghost was awful last year as the PP QB. I think now AV has way more options, with Ellis, Yandle and Risto, which I think is a good thing for Provey because honestly I really thought he was gassed most of the year and that more than anything impacted his play.

I really wanted Fletcher to sign Nick Foligno who I think would have really solidified our bottom 6, however Boston offered him 2 years at over $3M AAV so he was beyond the Flyers budget. Thompson will be a part time depth player who will play based on match-ups. He is low cost and gives the AV some flexibility in his match-ups from game to game. I am not concerned about the signing, he is strictly a role player.
- jd250

This is where we disagree. He will be a staple in the lineup imo.

Yeah he will play his role. And won’t complain when the kids get inserted. Also insurance for the post season. Chuck said. It’s now or later.

I was hoping for glendening or bellemare. Also thought brassard had an outside shot as his best years were under av. But not too worried about it. Nate is just a fill in as some of the young guys are question marks yet.

He had York on some of the PP and had Allison on the PP. What other young players were not getting minutes?

- J35Bacher

I recall there were games late in the season where the Flyers we tied or down by a goal and AV put out the same PP unit of Ghost, Jake, G, Patrick and Couts. I would have liked to see Farabee and Allison be on the 1st PP unit.

As I've said ad nauseam, Fletcher is pushing his chips into the middle with King Jack off-suit. It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off for him.

No doubt the Flyers are a better team now on paper. The question is how close are they to contender status and not simply a playoff team?

- StepfordSam

I think the Flyers are a solid team that will make the playoffs and even win a round, however they still lack elite talent, which I think is the one thing that pushes a good team over the top. Can Hart develop into a goalie as dominant as Vasky? Can Farabee be a top 3 scoring threat? Can Allison develop in to the next Tim Kerr? Will Foerster continue to develop into that accurate sniper the Flyers desperately need on their power play? These are questions that only time will answer.

I think Nashville would agree with you, and Chuck Fletcher said as much in his presser when he made the trade, i.e. that Myers will develop into a very good defenseman. I still would trade Myers for 5 years of Ellis who I think is a superior defenseman.
- jd250

Flyers upgrade for at least the next 3 seasons, in the meantime they can draft and look for possible replacements for Ellis. Hate losing Myers, love getting Ellis, just have a plan for when Ellis declines.

When it comes to Myers, the majority is on the player.

When it comes to Risto, it's the poopty Sabres and playing him too many minutes.

Ya'll need to make up your minds.

York is 20 years old and he's not Cale Makar. There is really no downside for him to gain more experience on the Phantoms.
- jd250

You have no idea what York is.

Fact: York was a superior player and more recognized for his performance than Adam Fox was in college and for USNDT. Yet you slobber all over Fox every time you want to denigrate the Flyers ability to get Dmen.

Fact: York and Fox are nearly identical in size with York being an inch taller

Fact: Fox was drafted 66th; York obviously 14th.

Is York going to come in and be Fox and win a Norris in 2 years??? No idea but you have no idea either.

I think the signing has AV written all over it….if the coach feels he can use this guy and he’s only an 800 k hit, then why not? As far as the Islanders series…every Flyer got hemmed in.
- landros 2

A really simple reason. Thompson is terrible. I don't care if they are paying him $5 an hour.

AV is stubborn on certain areas. Blind spot if you will.

I hope one of the younger guys makes it impossible for him to play him on a regular or semi regular basis. The scary thing is if they cant then another case of overrating the flyers prospects.

Funny how VDV played 250 games for the Flyers over the course of 4 seasons, then never played another NHL game at 30 years old.

"I absolutely believe AV has a bias towards playing veterans. Look at late last season when it was clear the Flyers were not going to make the playoffs, AV still put his veterans in all the key situations late in games instead of enabling the younger players to gain some experience."

ask any Rangers fan, it's why he was driven out of NY.

My only issue with Risto is his next contract, is there any chance he doesn’t get a raise?
- ClaudeFather

This will be interesting. He’s not the top so won’t be for 8 or more. Depends on length of the contract I would say. Said before if he does well would offer a long deal with a slightly lower cap hit. What/ who are comparables? I think around 6-6.5 for a long deal would work.

When a coach's livelihood is based on wins and loses I have to believe they lean towards experienced players instead of developing players. GM got him some vets to ease the transition to the younger players. More time in AHL won't hurt York. I can't see Thompson (or all D) dressing in all 82 games either. I'm sure we'll see them get games this season. If they play well with Phantoms, then that is a good problem to have. Bring them up. The biggest question mark/concern is if Frost isn't ready. What do we do at 3C?

On paper, not a bad line-up.

G / Coots / TK or Farabee
JVR / Hayes / Atkinson
Lindblom / Frost? / Farabee or TK
Laughton / Thompson / NAK
Laczynski / Bunny

Provy / Ellis
Sanheim / Risto
Yandle / Braun
York / Morin

Don’t care what your size charts say but York looks considerably smaller than Fox on the ice

I think Laczynski will beat out Aube-Kubel for opening night roster spot on 4ht line. He can play wing and center and I think he brings better defensive game. Can also kill penalties too.

Lacynski and Laughton can play center. There is also the off chance you move Giroux into center and keep Laughton on the wing

If Laczynski or whoever cant beat out NAK doesn't speak well to the alleged depth they have.

Will the German actually get a shot to make the team.

I would love to see Rubstov earn a spot but he needs to show growth. Allison and Laczynski were able to produce and didn't look out of place in the AHL. You need to see that from Rubstov. Even Foerestter and Wisdom were able to produce and play well. If a younger player wants to be called up and earn a spot they have to force their way.

Apparently we won't know if Rubstov is any good until he gets in 300 NHL games. That's what someone was using as a benchmark for Meyers, maybe 200 games since he is a forward.
