I think jr’s issue was his lack of plan or identity he shopped for. If he could come up with a game plan that works with sully and an analytics person then he could be one hell of a gm.

The hawks hold all of the cards here. Maf either plays there or retire then hawks will get all that cap space back they will not trade him and retain salary that would be completely stupid and not what will be done by Stanbow.

Look at his stats. 44 games 24 points. McGinn had 13 in 37 games. Is that so much worse?

It's a pretty significant difference.

My guess is in the middle of the third year of that contract, you'll be reading about "How can the Blues get out from under the remaining years?"

This is the vast majority of UFA contracts. The market is such that you hope the guy fills a hole well in the first few years, and it will be bad in the final years. Only way to avoid it is stay away from UFA.
