Part of me feels the way The Hawks are going about their business is they are becoming the team we used to laugh at...throwing money at free agents and losing sight of the foundation...I do think we are better with Jones, Fleury, Johnson than we were last year...but what is the cost in the long run....as of now and after this year the cap situation should be good but I feel like we are becoming......The Flyers.

And we waste cap space on another player that muddies the water between rebuild and mediocrity.
- Ogilthorpe2

that wasn't the question.

What is 1.8 million of a cap space worth? A 2nd round pick seems fair to me.

So you would rather pay Pius Suter, 5 million AAV, after 1 year mainly playing with Patrick Kane? And that helps the rebuild HOW?

Seabs is added cap space, as is losing Johnson's cap hit.

Exactly. The rebuild has been decimated. It’s short sighted

Of the expendables who can bring a 3rd round pick or better? Zadorov? Strome? DeHaan? Connolly? Subban? Suter? Kampf? Carpenter? Shaws contract?

Stan is holding a fire sale!!

You need to get "rebuild" out of your brain that ship has sailed until the next GM tells Rocky he's crazy if he thinks this team can win now. Mediocrity is certainly a possibility I don't see much difference between this team and 2016-20.

Tampa's can go over the cap limit by the amount of Seabs' cap hit. He gives them more room. Losing Johnson also gives them room.

Who ever said anything about paying Suter $5.0?

None of Jones, Fleury, or Johnson help with a rebuild. Rebuilding is clearly no longer the goal.

I’m thinking they are in full distraction mode. Trying to be in the sports news for anything other than a sex scandal.

Could have been a less public version of what Doughy stated in LA.

I don't agree with what bowman exchanged for these players, but I think we can all admit that he's brought in players that are for the most part better than what we have/had on hand (Jones is better than all of our D-men, Fleury is easily the best goalie, and Johnson is better than Strome/Suter).

The Johnson move makes me concerned that they don't expect that Toews will be back this year. I'll be interested to see what finally shakes out of the FA's

- Chunk

That was my first thought also.

anyway only getting a 2023 2nd wasn't a good return for Tampa getting all that cap

Anyone know is Seabs contract is insured?

Because if it is, then it's choosing to pay Tyler Johnson real $$ at a 5 million dollar cap hit over Insurance covering most of Seabs salary

Seabs cap hit can disappear once the season starts, just like it's about to in Tampa every year

That Stan has not specifically addressed the rebuild is over is kind of odd. Somebody needs to ask him?

maybe i am different because if you and maybe others wanted a "real" rebuild you would have dealt Kane last summer....because that return is what jump starts everything and lets see what Eichel gets Buffalo.

His cap hit is huge, but teams find ways to squeeze it in when they feel they are acquiring a top asset. See Seth Jones.

Yet, when it was breached all I read is how we can't trade Toews, Keith or Kane because they "earned the right" to retire here and blah, blah, blah....it's a business then a sport. Simple. SO if people didn't want to trade those players when they should have then this is what you get.....a half ass approach and people can blame STAN BLOWMAN or ASF or whatever other cute poop all day long, but my anger lies with the Wirtz family.....

Hawks and Cubs are on the same path....Hawks won more titles, but both held on to fan loved assets far too long and either they retired (seabrook, hossa) or diminished (keith, Toews) or whatever else, but watch what the Cubs get for Rizzo or Bryant or Baez......

Do I like everything here? No, I was on board with a rebuild but when I started reading reports of Hawks sniffing around top D men and top goalies I realized it was bound to happen because either ownership and/or top assets (see kane) want to win and not sit in a long play.......

and this board's love affair with top picks and thinking all these players are rushed up when they fail needs to stop......go back and look at ages of 2/4/7 when they broke through......Hawks sold HIGH on Boqvist and Joker. Theyll likely need to sell high again on others.....like they did Cam Barker. Nature of the beast....draft picks help the rebuild, but this isn't an organization that has nailed draft picks even after Uncle Dale long left Florida, let alone Chicago.

If Hawks suck they could fire Colliton and have movable assets at the TDL. They could be back in rebuild mode pretty quickly. Still not much money committed beyond the end of the Toews and Kane contracts.

NOW we agree.....100%

You don't publicly say you are rebuilding and then do a dramatic 180...I also think Kane told them he wants to win and will play out his deal but if he didnt see a light....he was walking. That's my opinion ZERO fact but if you think about it.....Hawks have zero face without Kane.....Keith, Seabrook, HOssa, Sharp, Hammer, Crawford, all long gone......Toews is likely done after his next deal.....kane is the only one of the core still producing.

Add that to a poop storm of negative news and how do you quiet it and get fans excited? Bring in KNOWN established players......

THis whole band aid approach rips off if Bowman isn't on a plane to sit with Fleury and convince him to play......because the other 3 can't hold Fleury's 36 year old jock.....and I know you hate goalies, but Fleury is another level.....this isn't Huet or Lehner....this guy shores up many holes on a team that at times has zero clue what defense is.

I was on board with the rebuild and settled for at best mediocrity over the next few seasons. I've also stated its time for Bowman to go...not so much because of the moves he's made but because I believe a franchise benefits from a different perspective after a decade. I've never felt a player was rushed nor do I feel a dman's development is determined by what goaltender plays in net. I don't believe in throwing money at a problem or plugging a hole and at the same time I understand each move he's made...

If tjhis blows sky high....you build around Jones, DeBrincat and Dach (assuming he doesn't bust out)

You ask Toews and Kane where they want to go and start working the phones.....Take a smaller package to move Toews, and get some young cost controlled players and 1-2 picks for Kane.

At that point, all 31 teams are in play because by the time you are ready to win, 88/19 are having heritage nights at the UC

It doesn't technically disappear, just gives them flexibility to spend higher the closer they are to the cap when they put him on LTIR. They still have to be cap compliant to start the season. Hawks were carrying to much LTIR to start the season, with almost 11M between Shaw and Seabrook.

This is where you lose me. I don't believe players have these type of conversations with two years left on a deal. Like all players Kane wants to win and if Bowman knows anything...he knows that and doesn't need to be told by Kane himself or his agent. Trading a player like Kane or Toews is difficult because of the amount of money...most teams that are good don't have over 10 million in open cap space nor would they be willing to part with multiple assets equal to that plus prospects and picks.
