Why would Nashville pay anything?

If he's on LTIR with Habs it has no impact on Nashville.

What am I missing here?

- Nasty_Duck

It's not the LTIR, it's the possible retirement afterwards.

Not at that time, it would have been a horrible look. They were building something and loosing him would have killed it.

They had just lost Suter and the RIM guy was circling. Everyone in Canada (esp MTL) basically said Nashville "didn't deserve" a team (whatever that meant)

- farooge

Ball-silly or Silly-balls or whatever was a good amount before this. Point is Nashville did have a choice and they made it. 4 1st round picks isn't a slap in the face and you could argue if they took it they're a significantly better team today than they currently are (although they'd lose their scf run - like a run that ends in a loss matters - yeah I said it)

Bergy just found Danault's replacement

JDLR will be UFA, did not get a qualification offer

it's absolutely astounding to me that that guy has somehow managed to play in the NHL for 8 years.

if he retires before the end of the contract (still 5 y to go) it will impact Nash on the cap. like seriously.
- fidopro

Ding ding! As it is, they're lucky they changed the recapture terms. It used to be that they'd be penalized 24M plus in his final year. Now the amount can't exceed his cap hit, but the amount remains the same, hence the 7.8M hit until 2030.

I see the Habs sending Weber back to Nash for a "B" prospect...nothing crazy. I can't see the Habs trying to screw the Preds over this.

because if there's one thing we know about Marc Bergevin, it's his concern with optics

He won't be making the decision. Shea won't retire until he sees how the surgeries go. Bergy will be gone by then.

How will Nashville prevent him from retiring IF he actually wanted to forgo the 12M he is still owed on the contract?

Even IF he retires, I really don't see the NHL punishing Nashville.

1) they did not create the contract
2) The "penalty" did not exist when they matched the offer sheet
3) The penalty to NJ for Kovalchuk was rescinded I believe

The NHL will find a way around it and not cropple one of their teams.

Nashville will pay him the 12M to stay at home in LTIR...I know Montreal could do the same, but to not take advantage of the situation would be lazy. Respectful, yes, but lazy.
Kovalchuk was told if he was to "retire", he couldn't come back until his existing contract ended. When he came back a year or so early, NJ still held his rights, and had to go through waivers, etc... He couldn't just sign with a new team.

How does MON take advantage? What happens when Nashville says get bent?

Then Weber retires early, and Nashville gets nailed with a cap penalty of 7.8M until 2030, per the penalty, which was already restructured recently.
Edit: Nothing really changes for Weber, it's Nashville that has to worry.

And for those who are saying the penalty is unfair, yeah, but so was the manipulation of the contract to lower the cap hit. Even if the terms weren't written by Nashville, they were agreed to by Nashville, hence them paying the penalty.

i think the chances of Danault returning are higher than most think. i don't blame him for testing the market. he's hoping there's a big score out there but if there's not, the Canadiens will be there as a fallback option. he knows the Habs are likely unable to properly replace him and will welcome him back.
