The chicken or the dude that got drafted?
- pete26

St-Hubert, and everyone overreacting (including politicians, public figures and now god damn companies) are the joke.

Everything Mailloux has done since his stupid mistake were the right things. He said the right things, started counseling, apologized, wrote an apology, answered the press (even made a statement in french), was willing to not get drafted...

But you hear these people talking like the Habs just drafted Gilbert Rozon.

I think he expected more money from the Canucks than what he got here and so did Vancouver, that's why they didn't bother even offering him a contract because they had other players they focused on instead. He had to settle for less afterwards because the market was not willing to pay him what he expected. Taking a paycut would be like the McKinnon contract, big difference in my mind.
- AK27

Ok so settling for less is not a pay cut?

Dude, I’m half cut on red wine.

What’s your excuse??

This kid's transgression was so horrible that the maximum penalty was a simple fine. The 'never made a mistake' mob has far too many people losing perspective on this, and far too many other things. Great pick, go develop, see you in a few years.

a lot of hypocrisy going on... "oh of course I believe in rehabilitation and giving people a second chance, just not in my city".

I just hope they give him a chance to better himself.

And, as you said, hopefully he can become an important part of our team.

The pearl clutching on social media is a bit much.

But I have to say, with the way the world is today, with how companies are having serious psychlogical and sexual harrassement issues, you have to be (frank)ing socially tone deaf to do something like this. That was a bad move, PR wise...I really don't get Molson allowing this.

bettering himself in this situation is just not doing anything that could land him on a specific registry?

Taking a paycut is willingly accepting less money than what the market is ready to offer you at the time, that's the difference in my mind and it's a big one. Like when a player gets two offers and he takes the lesser one because he knows this team is better and will give him a greater chance to make the playoffs and compete. Or a star player resigning for obviously less money than what he would get in free agency to give his team more leverage to purchase better players under a hard cap.

There's plenty he can do moving forward.

For example, don't be shocked if he makes a donation towards a women centre with his first NHL paycheck (if it ever comes).

There's nothing more he could have done since his mistake and he said all the right things.

So he didn’t take a pay cut, because he would’ve gotten more from the canucks had they the cap space.

Gotcha..

- pete26

Dim Jim never made a qualifying offer because He had other stuff on his plate, Toffoli said F**k this and walked. Poor communications.

what I don't understand is how the habs are now this evil organization, while it was basically ok for other teams to pick him, or for the league to allow him to participate in the draft in the first place. sure it was a curious move by Bergevin considering the PR work that comes with such a choice in a market where everything is scrutinized and amplified, but he didn't break any rules. the idea that they are actually condoning what he did by drafting him is ridiculous.

100%

As I said, if it was my call, I would have suggested staying away from the unecessary drama.

Or would have told Bergevin the kid better be worth the trouble or....

Oh yeah, had a blast reading François Gagnon's article saying it wouldn't be as bad if they picked him with a later round.... or if he had been drafted in a smaller market.

Complete nonsense.

Continuing to use the word mistake kinda minimizes what he did, but it falls under the broad definition.

And he never apologized directly to his victim

if you find it's wrong for the habs to draft him, then it should be wrong for all teams, and the league should put in rules that forbid players to participate in the draft in the first place if they have unacceptable conduct on their record...

What else you wanna call it? Crime? Sure, let's go with that, he was sentenced for it after all. The point remains the same.

And the bolded is just wrong, he did it verbally, he did it in court and he wrote it down when she claimed she would have liked a written apology.

Seriously, I know we can't really judge his sincerity in all this because we don't know him, but he (and his PR team) did all the right things since it happened.

well the player did not want to be drafted. Montreal (frank)ed up by drafting him putting a lot of scrutiny on the player.

That was the victim's issue. He only apologized because he was told to and felt it lacked sincerity.

If you think they didn’t talk to him before they drafted him, you and AK27 should talk pay cuts..
