What exactly do the Hawks have to deal that will recoup a 1st round pick? That doesn't create another one that needs to be filled?
- Elbows15

Kane, DBC, and (maybe) Dach - those are the only ones

Does anyone have a hands-on description of the lesser Jones? I have nothing on him. What kind of a player he is and is he an NHL-player?
- FeatheredFinn

He’ll be in the mix the Kalynuk, Stillman, Mitchell and Beaudin for a roster spot. He’ll get a shot to keep Seth happy, but my guess is that Caleb is a #7 d-man.

Agreed. I doubt the Hawks get any NHL regulars from this draft. Maybe Dach, but that’s a stretch.
- DarthKane

Prevailing opinion floating around in scouting ranks seems to be that we'll be lucky to get one. Someone really needs to ask Kelley on the record what he saw that the others did not for the top three picks, at least.

The Sharp trade was a great one.

As a player Tallon was one of the worst 2nd overall picks in history and was a minus machine on the ice.

During theatre intermissions and saving orphaned pets, Smith put together a sneaky good drafting history with multiple teams.

Despite buckets of high first rounders, Florida won 1 playoff series in 10 years under Jesus Tallon's management.

- stevefrmglencoe

To be fair, Tallon wasn't in charge the whole time and the guy between Tallon's two tenures running the Panthers tore a great team down. Tallon's biggest mistake came last which is always the first thing your boss remembers signing Bob and for the record my wife thinks I invented sex.

I would be a bit more careful of scouting ranks this year as compared to the past. The last two seasons were a bit messed up, and not sure anyone's is as accurate as they would have been in past years.

I would venture to say that there will be a larger amount of 1st round busts, and late round surprises compared to most years.

Oh, and you were responding to Darth's post...............so there's that

Counting on DeHaan, if he is not dealt, for more than 25 games is a pipe-dream. Murphy and Jones are "givens" after that the next 5 are iffy at best, and down-right brutal at worse...

*edit....

Just to be clear....

Not saying the rest will NEVER be good. Mitchell, Stillman, Beaudin, Caleb Jones...among others...MIGHT be OK in a year or two. But for THIS year. EVERYONE after Jones and Murphy are HUGE question marks.

- hawk35

Having Murphy first pairing by default says "we're not great."

Wow, gotta say, I hadn't seen that excuse for Uncle Dale before.

The Panthers were a great team, so great they didn't go to the playoffs and they fired their GM???

The combined cost in $/cap space and assets given up could be crippling in the future. Not to mention if Boqvist becomes a top pair defender. Time will tell.
- Ztra

He'll be in the same division as Tom Wilson. Unless he learns to avoid getting lit up and not panic doing it, I don't see how he's going to last.

Never negotiate againt yourself which is what Bowman did. Why was it necessary to sign him to an extension right away? To justify the assets squandered away? No one else was interested in Jones once his asking price was known. Bowman had tunnel vision on Jones and wasn't wiling to do the one thing a buyer has to be able to do in any negotiation, walk away.
- Elbows15

Coming in second is still losing.
Stan had to go big enough to take him off the market that's what he was bidding against, ✅
Secondly, when a player signs an "extension" look at it as making the current year whole. It happens every time in other sports, usually by way of signing bonus. I have no idea what they did with Jones. I just know I'd rather have him playing for us than not. There's still two guys on the team making more than he does.

I'm not one of the big proponents of hits and fights, but damn if I didn't at this one as it was floating around in the Jones fans camp.

You cant possibly know that, he´ll be 28-29 then. And everybody has a contract that is a bit scary to the end side. Lets just hope for the best and see what comes. And none of those contracts mesh with the Jones-deal.
- FeatheredFinn

Jones will be 27 in the last year of his current contract. 30 in the 3rd year of his new contract. 35 in the last year of his contract.

I don't think management cares about the back years a necessary evil of signing him.

Thanks. That would be my uneducated guess as well. Cant see what it is that he is really good at. Not like the others. Of course I have seen them play, so theres that.

I hope he does ok, he seems like a good kid, but I think his ceiling is a top four, nifty puck mover, not a leader.

If Maatta is bought out Hawks gain $500,000 cap space this year and lose $250,000 next year. The Athletic is saying it could happen.

Thanks. I think that is doable for Jones. Not be a hindrance at the end that is. I just want to watch them play already.

Since when have we cared?
- Elbows15

True.

Busy it is, very. Normal, not so much. People are crazy right now. Also, (and probably contributing in no small way) the core business travelers are not back yet. So we are flying to fewer business hubs, while going to more and more leisure destinations. Less veteran frequent travelers = more chaos.
