So we're mortgaging our future to potentially catch lightning in a bottle. That's like mortgaging your house to buy lottery tickets. Exciting, not too bright.
- golfingsince

I think that's a terrible analogy seeing as draft picks are usually considered lotto tickets themselves. I don't agree that it's the BEST strategy, but I'm taking the approach that FA isn't going to accept a strategy where the team stagnates by keeping (and adding) more picks and praying that they manage to draft their way out of irrelevancy. At some point you need to try and trade your futures for the now, if only because you're sending a really poor message to your core that they suck and there's going to be help, but it'll come 2-3 years later if those high picks we got pan out.

I said above that i think we're a playoff team. My problem is that we're blowing our load when I don't feel we're a contender. We are going to have gaps to fill over the next several seasons and we're trading away the picks that can become the players that fill those gaps.

To me it's a nearly identical analysis every year with this team. Have we improved? Yes. Have we done it at the expense of our future? yes. Have we done enough to take the next step? Probably not.

- golfingsince

I agree we aren't a contender, but we have the pieces to contend soon. I say we are more likely to make the playoffs than miss this year.

For you road trip types, Drance mentioned two Canuck v Kraken games that come before a Seahawks game. One November, the other New Year’s Day maybe?

I live here lol. I can't wait for Canuck's fans!

At what point this season will we realize that Pearson is now an overpaid 3rd line winger?

We need this upcoming season to realize that?

Not a bad read about the trade and why our fanbase is like this.

How so? TBL pay more for a couple of their 3rd liners.

No way in hell, we are still that same soft pushover team that relies on a goalie to carry them when the coaching systems crumble into nothing.
- A_SteamingLombardi

Although I think we've done some to address that, we might be a 2nd round team at best. The past playoff thingy means nothing to me as we hardly qualify without a pause and expanded field.

If OEL balls out, then I think we have a contending team. Big risk, big reward type of deal.

I agree, but to me making the playoffs isn't the endgame. I don't see enough in our system to make us take another step after we make the playoffs. Hopefully i'm wrong......it's happened before.

It's pretty much the same issue i've had throughout the regime, trading away the future to make us marginally better now.

They're due to break through, but even then unless they win it all they've wasted it. They had so much great young talent a few years ago and they've managed to (frank) it all up.

I think you're missing the point i'm making. We've been trading those picks for going on 8 years, therefore we don't have the players now. We continue to operate like this, therefore we won't have the players in the future.

And it took Tampa many many years to get there with that best team on paper until they got over the hump. See Colorado, period.
- DariusKnight

Sure. Toronto was not at all the best roster on paper is my point. Colorado and tbay were both better imo and still are

We will have more than one rookie, which is not bad for a team with "no prospects"
- neem55

Woo had a good first year in the ahl, he's a pain in the azz to play against. I watched him in junior and he had all the good players off thier games with being tough, he had the crowd booing him in PG I was smiling lol.

Could we have been better with the players that would have been picked with the picks traded away? Maybe? The problem is that at some point you have to say we drafted our main core, now is the time to surround them with the talent they need to succeed. Edmonton and Buffalo have had multiple top first/second/third round picks in the last 10 years and still haven't broken through the first round. You have Eichel, Reinhart and others who've been high 1st round picks wanting out. It doesn't take much for player to get fed up with waiting for help before they want to go elsewhere.

You can argue that JB's never been able to find that talent but at least he's not saying, oh well, we suck so let's just continue to suck until we draft our way out of suckage and trade all our assets for more draft picks. That's a recipe for disaster too just like what we've got now.

What if demko turns into price in his prime? Then everyone eats crow here lol. QH had a bad year, petey got injured. I think posters here overreacting with negativity from the past, is that an understatement? Lol.

Bang on. Somebody will claim these facts as excuses lol. Deflecting from what the present is what the future could be.

So Does that mean if Miller is centring the third line, he is an overpaid their line player too?

And my point is that Buffalo, Edmonton, Dallas and Calgary (to some extent) have all saved all their picks and added more and yet are still mired in mediocrity (or worse). Having players in the future isn't going to make a difference if the core you have now stagnates because you aren't willing to take risks and mortgage your future for the now. Again, I said it's not a GOOD strategy, but it's better than hoping for the best and praying that you can avoid a Buffalo situation where your 1/2OA superstars don't end up disgruntled because you can't or won't give them the help they need to succeed and are constantly rebuilding or saying that you're still in a rebuild.
