his biggest problem was that he never used that skill and edge work to drive to the net...the infamous "max-curl" along the half-wall was his downfall as he never had the balls to go to the dirty areas
- Michael Pachla

Ya I remember that and he didn't start like that...Memory is foggy but I think it was after he came back from injury.

He would enter the zone then curl and stop high in the offensive zone but most of the time he would throw the puck away after that. Think that was him. He never did that when he started out.

I will never understand why people criticize and single out Afinogenov when basically that entire team was as soft as custard.

Afinogenov dropped the gloves once and a while, too.

The Sabres only have about 43,550 million on their cap right now which includes Jack and when he is gone that brings it down to 33,550. They are going to have to make some deals for salary because they have to hit the floor and I think it has to be 60% of 80+ million, Dahlin will make up some of that. Goalies will help.
- GilPerreault11

The cap floor is $60.2M.

I think it was more about expectations. Also Afinogenov got paid and we lost JP Dumont because of it and Dumont was the better player.

The very beginning of the end of our winning team.

I am not saying he was a bad player. I think he had the tools to be an 80-100 point player but just didn't put it all together.
- sabresfan69

Of all the bums who've worn the Buffalo uniform, and Max is the one you're taking a dump on?

Dude was the most exciting player in Sabres history not named Dominik Hasek. There. I said it.

He's also the most polarizing and frustrating player in Sabres history but I blame Lindy Ruff for that. The way he handled Max, and even Vanek the last 3 years he was here should have gotten him fired.

I thought it was the decision of keeping Kotalik over Dumont?

Yes. He was always throwing himself around the walls. Now that "skate up the ice twice as fast as anyone only to circle behind the net and throw it out front expecting Vanek's lazy ass to be there" move he always did was absolutely infuriating.

Didn't Afinigenov get 3m and Dumont was going to arbitration and the sabres traded him they had to pick one or the other.

Kotalik replaced him but it wasn't because of Kotalik it was because the sabes didn't want to pay Max and JP.

They played in the scoring era. Afinogenov played in the slash, hook, hack, grab and interfere with the offensive player-era. Also, we saw him explode once they got rid of that stupid 2-line pass offsides rule.

The Buffalo Sabres rejected forward J.P. Dumont's one-year, $2.9
million salary arbitration award on Tuesday, allowing the
seven-year veteran to become an unrestricted free agent.

The team exercised its "walkaway" option, as allowed under NHL
rules, in an attempt to keep its payroll in line. Dumont's salary,
set in arbitration last week, represented a $1.3 million raise over
what he made last season, which would have pushed the Sabres closer
to the $44 million salary cap.

"Unfortunately, it's part of the business," Sabres general
manager Darcy Regier said. "It had a little bit to do with the
amount of the award, certainly. The other part, quite honestly,
we're up against the cap."

Damn, my memory is pretty good

That same year Max signed a 3 year deal for 11m

And 15-20 other players. Mike Ramsey any day over max, rich Martin, Rene , Danny gareโ€ฆ. The list is long. Max was fun to watch good player but to say best Sabres forward is an absolute joke.

They have never been so valuable to the Sabres as they are now, not even Skinner in his 40 goal year.
