Just frustrating that they take a 5 mil bottom 6er from the cap strapped Stanley cup champs, then pick a marginal player from us when Jvr was cheaper than gourde and would have still been the krakens highest profile selection behind giordano
- Shrike

Gourde is a better player than you're giving him credit for. He may be a bottom 6 player on TB but can play higher on other teams. He's a high energy skilled player who doesn't quit.

I thought I read somewhere that Francis said it. I'll see if I can find it.

Edit: I could not be more wrong lol https://www.prohockeyrumo...ight-to-spend-to-cap.html

That said, I agree with you that draft day indicated otherwise. But as you also said, we shall see when the dust settles.

How did draft day indicate otherwise?

Not a fit on this team in my opinion.
- MJL

Kind of what I thought. I was trying to think it through as he might not be expensive. Might be able to get a short term. Just didn't know if his skillset fit in with this make up of the defense.

Its weird, but as I look at their roster, I see a pattern. Pick a guy for a position, provided his salary is about 40% less than the average for that position.

Thus, Gourde is not cheap at 3C, has term, NTC. But how about at 1C? Eberle is not cheap either, but a good bargain as 1RW. Ditto Donskoi at 2RW. Larrson at 1RD? Tanev at 1LW?

I cannot figure out the Gio/Oleksiak combo, unless Gio leaves and JO takes over at 1LD. But everywhere else, I see a simple rule of thumb: pick BPA for a position provided existing/projected salary is about 60% of league average for that position.

If I am right, they don;t muck around much in trades/UFA. If they do, I am flat out wrong. *smile*

- PT21

They passed on numerous players that fit your premise. It had nothing to do with percentage of salary. You overcomplicate everything and see everything as some statistical or odds based formula. Instead of it being simple hockey decisions based on what kind of players they were looking for and what kind of mix they wanted while keeping leverage to make moves for the future.

Ellis and Provorov are going to play on the PP. He's not a strong fit with Sanheim. They need a player more slanted towards the D side with PK ability that is a decent puck mover.

I'll take a shot.

Big game: Hamilton, he would only cost money but that might have past with Ellis move.

UFA: Ryan Murray is interesting. Bogosian played well in TOR i thought, might be able to get on short, low AAV deal.

Trade: Manson fits a lot of needs but not sure the costs.

Final "The Athletic" mock has us taking Chaz Lucius.

Lucius missed a lot of time this season with a knee injury. Missed the World Under 18 Tournament as well. Lacks pace in his game and not active at all defensively. Has skating issues. He does have some slick hands though and a nice shot.

To be fair, and I almost never agree with MJL, why does he have to offer a suggestion like he actually has a say in the move?

The Flyers should get "Player X" for "Blah Blah"...ok. Why does the other team want to take it, just because it's hypothetical? No matter what it really doesn't matter because it's stupid.

Flyers should trade Giroux for 8 1st round picks!! Ok and someone says that's stupid because no team would pay that. Ok trade Giroux for a 6th round pick! Ok and someone says that's stupid because that's not enough. Everything in between is still stupid because both parties, that are not making the suggestion, have to agree whether someone likes it or not.

He is the smartest guy in the room. It would be great to hear who he would pursue.

But you don't need to give a names when you have traits you want in that player.

Solid defensively because you want to pair him with Sanheim, provides some physicality, can play some PK.

Those are the type of guys you would target when looking to fill that role.

Good point. I didn't do the math as you did, I just used my eyes that night and assumed they had a cap minimum mandate.

If I am right, they don;t muck around much in trades/UFA. If they do, I am flat out wrong. *smile*

Ek says they're making noise about Eichel. My gut says Eichel would not view that positively. He strikes me as Hall 2.0 - not happy and fully engaged unless he's on what he considers a good team.

It is real easy to give the traits. Throw out some names.

Exactly and by using those characteristics the other person can use their imagination on who that player can be.
