Yeah but you're a short dude with something against short dudes... so adjusting for bias, he's a high end 2nd liner/low end 1st.

Sure but ask yourself with the cap next year where would it be spent?

The way I look at this deal is this:

OEL (signed for 8.25 mil - 12% retained (7.2mil~) until 2027) = Beagle, Ericksson, Roussel (12mil~ caphit until 2022) + 2022 2nd/7th

Sure, the 3 contracts expire at the end of this season but regardless of what you think of OEL and his declining abilities at 30 years old, he's still a top 4 D-man that will be able to QB the PP2 and be that Tanev/Edler-like mentor for Q. Hughes and help him reach his potential and Beagle, Erickson and Roussel were either bound for Abbotsford or stapled to the press box next year. I'll take a contributing player on a bad contract instead of 3 players who can't even contribute on bad contracts even if they are expiring at the end of the year any day of the week. The 2 picks are basically to help with taking on the cap load since I don't expect the 3 will ever see the ice in Arizona.

Garland (RFA (expired rookie contract) 25 years old) = 9th OA

This to me is essentially a wash, Garland is a legit top 6 forwards who will most likely take over for Miller once his contract expires and the draft this year is such a crapshoot because of the lack of ability to scout because of COVID knocking out most of the junior leagues and restrictions probably making this draft class weaker than it might have otherwise been. That's why I'm not against this part of the deal, as Garland projects to be what the player we might have picked at this spot could potentially be. The question will be will Garland sign for a reasonable contract and will he live up to his potential here in Vancouver.

Looking at it, this seems like it opens the door for Benning to unload Schmidt now and get some more capspace and/or more assets. I also think Holtby is also a candidate to be moved. Don't forget that OEL has ties to the Sedins and has stated in the past that he would love to play in Vancouver and might rejuvenate his career here a bit. The point I'm trying to make is this, Benning and Green are on the hot seat and NEED to make the playoffs to save their jobs, this is clearly a win-now type deal that in the short-term makes us better while sacrificing our future and hoping that those futures don't develop into what we have already.

I see this as a potential next JT Miller trade, where OEL gets his game back playing for the team he wanted to go to all along, and we got ourselves the top 9 forward we need for the future. Could Benning have done better? Sure, but I'll reserve my judgement until I see what contract Garland signs for, and what (if any) moves Benning makes to supplement this trade (like trading Schmidt and Holtby for assets/cap relief).

Despite what people think on how I evaluate this trade.

OEL has wanted out for a while, and the sedins are insanely close with him on a personal level, so hopefully a motivated OEL does help things.
Garland is a fantastic player, reminds me of marchand-lite.

I still 100% would have rather been patient, kept the picks, and waited a year to see LE, virtanen, Beagle and roussel gone, and holtby and Schmidt traded, but here we are.

- Codes1087

I probably would have kept the 1st as well.

It improves the forwards on paper for this season.

I wasn't trying to knock Garland by saying that, I just don't think he is in that pay range.
One thing I say about Garland is any time I watched a Coyotes game, he was the only noticeable forward.
I am also an OEL fan and think he will be a nice addition.
Although, as I said earlier, I don't like seeing so many picks traded, over the years, this trade reminds me of all the whining and the laughing at Bergevin, when he traded super-duper star PK Subban for Shea Weber.

I hear you, these aren't the moves I would make but I think he team has gotten significantly better adding D1ckenson, OEL, Garland and Podkolzin this year.

In my mind if you can't move Schmidt for a decent return or can't move Holtby without giving up an asset or retaining, you just buyout Holtby.

I still think Schmidt is much better than he looked last year. I only move him if you are getting back a cheaper top 4 RHD.

Vancouver goalie Braden Holtby was discussed as part of the trade package in the blockbuster deal between the Coyotes and Canucks. As I have said before teams are interested in Yotes Goalie Darcy Kuemper - mainly Colorado. So makes some sense Holtby's name came up.
