In a not so great draft as this one.

I'd expect to draft a forward at 9oa that turns into a player like Conor Garland. A .80 PPG forward. Maybe a bit higher if lucky and someone dropped.

It's the fact that he isn't under contract and you are taking on 6 more years of OEL on the decline and Arizona only has one more season of all 3 of those players.

Taking on 5 more years of a bad contract. What's Van's return on that? That's astronomical.

If Van got a 2nd back from Arizona, I'm probably fine with the trade, good for both sides no one won.

If they don't. Jim better get Garland on a sweet (frank)en deal long term.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, acquired by VAN, is on arguably the worst contract in the entire league. He has been absolutely terrible for the past three seasons and is getting paid like a #1 for the next six seasons.

He's a 7M 3rd pairing guy on the decline.

And that's what hurts. No 1st rounder for consecutive years is going to leave a big gap in the future roster and salary cap room.

All those contracts were a mess of dim Jim's own making. He pays the 9th overall, to clean up his own mess. Couldn't sign Toffoli cuz he kept Virtanen who is getting cancelled for his alleged rapist behavior and uselessness.
