What a lot of people don't see with OEL is the human factor. 3 years with a coach that he doesn't get along with, and 2 of those years on a team that wants to get rid of his salary because they can't afford the cash. This stuff affects your play on the ice. He's coming in to a team and coach that want and respect him, he's going to be better IMO. - Retinalz
I agree he’ll be better, but the question is how much? Especially on a Canucks team that itself isn’t great, how much is he going to improve? With Shaw added in I have some optimism, but the reality is OEL isn’t that young and his contract is loooong, especially after declining the past few years. It’s not like he was great and then last year was an exception to it all.
It’ll be interesting how they navigate the cap now, hopefully JV and Holtby go shortly.

I would have really liked Dylan Guenther in the future. Like really would have liked him. Plus I probably would have liked the 2nd next year and not having to deal with OEL's cap hit for the next 6 years.
OEL bad year makes me think about Schmidt's bad year in Vegas before he was traded to Van.
Garland is a good young improving player who will play with a centre in Van that Arizona had nowhere near as good. Plus I was wondering who would be on the 2nd power play unit the other day and Hogz and Pearson were pretty much the only 2. With Garland you could go Rathbone and OEL probably.
OEL was a team worst plus minus last season |

Just from that video, you can tell that Garland is not very big and probably not the 5'10" that NHL has him listed at but more of what he said.
Plays fast though and that is something the Canucks need in their top 6. |

4. Get a faster forward who can shoot and pass. – Conor Garland checks that box. Two years ago he had 22 goals and last year he had 27 assists. Garland’s arrival means that Tanner Pearson can move down to the third line and Bo can have a line mate who can get him the puck. Imagine a fast second line, freed from tougher match ups…..Bo could get 30 goals this year.
Hansen did say last season that Jim needed to improve the club so that Hogz didn't have an automatic top 6 spot. |

On HF boards it is what all 5 of their fans have talked about for years when answering about his play. |

Benning wasn’t bullpoopting when he said he was going to be aggressive. I want to hate this deal, but I don’t think that I do. Getting rid of three poopty contracts in one transaction is crazy. Garland is a sneaky good pick up and he should just be sliding into his prime.
OEL, that could be a problem, especially 3, 4 years down the road. But from where I’m sitting (in the Okanagan, surrounded by an unprecedented number of wildfires, after a week and a half where we absolutely shattered temperature records, hopefully emerging from a year and a half pandemic that shut the world down, etc) I’m not exactly worried about the Canucks in 4 years.
Benning might have saved his job and made his successor’s job significantly harder in one deal. I kinda like it. - CubanBuffet

I am hoping Schmidt is gone. - Reubenkincade
I'm willing to give Schmidt another chance this season. Last season was a mess for the whole team.
I'm not sold on there being that much trade fire with him. Where there's smoke in Canuck land, there is usually Rick D lying and exaggerating his face off.

OEL was a top 10 defenseman for years. If he can regain 75% of what he was, he will be a #2 dman. |

And people say Sakic is a great GM? Makar is not worth more than Heiskanen, especially not at 2 years less. |

Button in that video alluded to Tochett playing a style that wasn't good for OEL.
Since OEL entertained the league he is minus 109
Risto, Severson, Petry are worse during that time. 3 RHD |

OEL pretty much replacing Schmidt
Pierre LeBrun
@PierreVLeBrun
As I said on TSN last night, as soon as Ristolainen was traded Friday, some of the teams that missed out on him reached out to the Canucks again on Nate Schmidt. So we'll see where that goes over the coming week.
Hopefully Schmidt's entire contract is gone and picks are coming back. I'd take a 3rd and 4th in this draft for Schmidt at this point in time. |

Agree on Schmidt I'd like to see him back under a full 82 game sched with the new roster additions. |
