I don't think this is the correct way to look at it.

Dubas traded a 7th round pick and a prospect to protect his roster from having a hole in it that he couldn't afford to fill. He was good with either Kerfoot or McCann being on the roster.

On TSN overdrive he spoke about protecting Holl. He said him and the team decided if Seattle took Holl they likely would have flipped him and that the leafs couldn't replace what he brought to the team for the same cap hit.

He never once said he wouldn't upgrade but why not trade Holl yourself if there's an apparent market for him? Why let Seattle get that win?

It's literally a prospect and a 7th to protect the roster from losing something of value to the expansion.

There's an argument that could be made that if they trade Rielly for futures and cap space and sign Hamilton, they make out better.

There's another argument that could be made if they go for cap space and a cheap replacement that can actually defend... They make out better.

So Philly paid the 13th overall, a 2022 2nd, a 2023 2nd, a 2022 7th, and Robert Hagg to "upgrade" from Gostisbehere to Ristolainen.

Plus he costs $900k more this season. What on earth.

To take advantage of other GMs you usually have to be a seller though.

I think Holl gets you more post-expansion than he would pre because team's would have to protect their new asset.

That is a fair take. I think so far he has had good returns. Kadri seems like a wash but he's definitely won Muzzin and Campbell trades.
