I no longer pin my "hope" on this team. They deserve nothing but a critical, emotionless, and yes even cynical view from the fanbase.

That just sounds sad.

You know what is sad? 54 years of futility. Not even a Cup final. Not even a playoff series win since 2004.

THAT is sad.

Unfortunately they can't play the entire game.

I think this team needs more depth. The aforementioned Marner/Matthews make so much money that we can't afford depth at market value.

So I am forced to hope that young players can step in and provide depth at rock bottom prices.

- Leafs43

One problem is they played too much in the regular season last year.

But bringing up guys like Robertson and Sandin when they’re ready and mixing them into the lineup at cheap prices isn’t some failure that we’re forced to do.

The current cap situation doesn’t leave any room for error. They made some improvements last year and some mistakes. Move on from the mistakes and use the money you’ve got to improve further. I’m not going to do the math now but if you can move Kerfoot, they have $12M or do to spend (?). Use $4M or whatever you can afford for a winger with some speed and size for the top line. Goalie next priority, second line winger and fill out 3rd line and a 7th D with internal guys, trades and FAs.

Not splashy but not nothing and opportunities for improvement. But nothing matters unless top 4 play at the top of the their game in the playoffs.

Ok - but I don't have control over that.

I get grumpy after Leaf losses and failures. But I eventually revert back to controlled optimism.

If I ever become permanently cynical regarding the Leafs I'd probably just find something different to follow. I know Leaf "fans" who are permanently cynical. They don't even get happy when the Leafs win.

What is the reason for even watching and following at that point?

It's pretty hard to look away from a train wreck.

Dubas actually said "for better or worse, I'm all in on this core". Hardly a confident assessment from the architect.

He's (frank)ed, and he and Shanny will be gone by the spring.

As long as that critical, emotionless, and even cynical view makes you happy, go for it.

C'mon fiftsy's ...Us LFC fans know the pain of being a fan ...we laugh at that pain. We've got the skin of a rhino.

We'll never walk alone! We've got each other and we've got our eternal irrational optimism!

None of those teams had 40 million tied up in 4 forwards....two of which are soft.
Jt and am are studs.

- Fakepartofme

Bear in mind that some were awfully close. Our distribution is heavier - there's no doubt, and it's all in forwards, which is problematic in my opinion as well.

Tampa has had some great negotiations and tax advantages that help them. But they are also a very well run and scouted team.

I think regardless of what we think will happen this year we can probably all agree that this is the make it or break it season for Shanny, Dubas, Keefe, and the Core ...the last kick at the can.

Dubas' own words sounded like he knows it. It's successful year or find a new gig.

Oh yeah, we play only sens and habs in the pre season and then open with the habs again.

Great.

And they drafted well.
Even beyond the first round.

Man, Dubas has been here for how long? Stamkos has been there as the leader of their core for how long? Compared to Matthews, what 5 years?

Edmonton gets a bad rap. Most urban green space in North America, best beer store in Canada and the mountains.

Also when you're wealthy and live in a mansion, and can afford the best of anything, which city you're in probably evens out.

Yes, CanadaCup, it is that simple. If they played near their potential in the playoffs, Dubas wouldn't look as inept as he does and the team would have at least 1 series win.

I don’t understand the all Canadian matchups after a full year of it

It’s obviously going to happen, but why as a season opening event, that they’re obviously billing it as

It's traditional, but yeah this year would've been the one where it's meaningful to have Toronto open against Detroit for example.
