Yup. If he retires early his yearly cap hit is 24M+ divided by the years remaining. - mjones242
I hope he's putting the franking screws to Nashville.
"Hey Poilsie - my wife and I would like to come down to Nashville, stay in a nice hotel and check out some music shows. My wallet is locked in the safe that has my retirement papers - what do you think I should do?"
They both have 4 years left at 11M - if we are comparing contracts, Marner could easily out perform JT in those 4 years.
If the reported offer sheet was similar to what Marner signed for, the Leafs should have surely taken the 4 firsts, but that is a different discussion. - winsix
You need to compare the negotiating strength when comparing contracts.
As a UFA JT had a LOT more strength to negotiate than Marner did.
IMO JT contract is 1M too high and Marner 2M too high.

Oh, how I would love to see this play out. And the added benefit of the Habs getting at least a little bit screwed would be awesome-sauce.

Which makes no sense. The longer he plays (fulfilling more of the contract) the worse it becomes. They should be reducing the total penalty for every year he plays.
But I think the NHL would have stepped in and changed the penalty if it came to that. Can't have a team taking a 24M cap-hit penalty in one season.
Apparently Dubas made a great presentation on the John Tavares signing.
T J Brodie signing was great.
It hasn't been 100% poop. - Atomic Wedgie
Given where they are with cap, prospects, goaltending, draft picks and series wins, how good were those moves. Clearly none of them were difference making.
The fact that Hyman wants to go to poophole Edmonton instead of staying in Toronto, apart from the extra money is an indication as well that he's not very happy with the team culture. Could see how a character guy that works hard, is intelligent and wants to win cost what costs doesn't like the entitlement culture around him.
I hope it works out for him (but what a cost to pay living in Edmonton.... I guess being 50% on the road and having a June-Oct Summer pause where he can train wherever he wants makes up for it to some extent). - MaximusAurelius
already have Greedy mitch, dont need Greedy Zach.
Mitch should give him about 2 mil a year so he can stay

Look at that table, if Weber retires (or dies) before that last year of his deal, Preds get a $24M cap hit right up the wazoo. There would be less than $1 M of pre-tax money on the line for him. - winsix
Fine. I’m just saying insurance can squawk all they like but when they put high priced sports docs on the stand against insurance docs, the sports docs win. Teams and players bring in the top guys to treat them. They have extensive medical history with the player and will win if there’s a fight.

apologies if you live in Edmonton.
Passed by there for a few days while on a trip from Toronto through Canada to Vancouver Island.
Edmonton was.. not the most interesting part of the trip. - MaximusAurelius
Edmonton gets a bad rap. Most urban green space in North America, best beer store in Canada and the mountains.
Also when you're wealthy and live in a mansion, and can afford the best of anything, which city you're in probably evens out.

You know it was 12 years from when Tampa drafted Stamkos first overall before they won the cup? Obviously they made a lot moves between then and now - including drafting Hedman, Vasilevskiy and so on . . . but it's only been 5 since we drafted Matthews.
Everyone talks about windows closing, but Washington took 12 years from Ovechkin being drafted as well.
Some teams - like Chicago or Pittsburgh have it happen faster.
I don't love everything they've done or are doing, but I'm trying not be too impatient with the process.

Comparing them to situations that worked out well eventually is not going to over well with the MegaDowners and Dubas Victims.

poop cold in the winter but not Winnipeg cold. - Canada Cup
The dryness makes it less punishing than I thought. Same with the heat. The long summer days at that latitude and big sky were nice. Jasper is the best.
I doubt Hyman will go to the mall so he should be okay.

I'm still surprised he'd leave for Edmonton , I know it's more money, but still. How much money to people need

None of those teams had 40 million tied up in 4 forwards....two of which are soft.
Jt and am are studs.
