Oh, one more question....if Webber is done...how does that play out for Montreal and Nashville on the $ side of things? - underhill14
No impact. He apparently is not retiring. Looks like he is going the LTD route.

Well, they've left it open-ended so that they can claim his LTIR relief rather than being forced to pay the cap repayment penalties. - Monkeypunk

I just had another look at that cap penalty and it's as hilarious ludicrous for Nashville if he retires early as I remembered it:

So if he retires any time in the next 5 year, Nash has to pay $5m all the up to $25m depending on the year?
If that's the case, wholly fu2k balls. That sucks. |

One thing to add, and this is courtesy of Pierre LeBrun:
If Weber were to retire now, Montreal would only be impacted by a $542k cap recapture penalty for 5 years; Nashville would be hit with $4.9m for 5 years. In 2022 those numbers go down for Montreal to $214k, but up for Nashville to $6.1m.
In 2023 and beyond Nashville gets hit with the full $7.9m in cap recapture for each year until 2025, but then may have additional recapture penalties per year afterwards (like $1m in 2026, or not being out from under it until 2028 were Weber to retire in the final year of the deal)
Originally that recapture was astronomical in the last year ($24m) but there was an amendment in 2020 that limited this recapture penalty to not exceed the maximum AAV, but noted that the full amount had to be paid out, so it would be deferred over time.

Yeah, very few players (McJesus, AM34, ECHL) have achieved the post-ELC contract plateau that Marner managed. - mjones242
I am not a fan of the deal, Marner does have more ppg than Eichel. This would have been better at $8.5 to $9.0 M AAV. Rantanen at $9.25 is a better deal. What did influence that Rantanen deal though, was the fact that MacKinnon makes like Hyman Sean Monahan money.

Weber is going to retire before that deal is up. He is so going to (frank) Nashville for trading him. Imagine the Preds getting (frank)ed 3 times by Weber. On the contract, on the trade and on the leftovers. That $1.2 we owe hot dog boy seems small now.

If you retire, you don't get paid the full amount of the contract.
If you remain in LTIR, you keep all the money.
Guess what I would do?
Guess what Weber will do? |

The league will probably (and should probably) give Nashville relief given the fact that they didn't write the illegal contract, Philly did.
If anything Nashville/Philly should split 50/50.

Dubas speaking to the media:
"We're going to see the best season we've had yet, and i'm willing to bet everything on that"
- buddzy
As if he has a choice. He was handed everything good thing that is on the Leafs right now except Spezza. He has literally done nothing to improve the roster, the cap situation, the prospect cupboard, traded or gave away a bunch of draft picks and has managed to achieve zero playoff series wins. Has he actually done anything right? |

The most hilarious ludicrous thing about this was Nashville was going to get crushed for a) a contract they didn't write - they just matched; and b) rules that didn't exist when they signed Weber.
Franking Bettman.
If I was the Canucks or another team that's been screwed by cap recapture, I'd sue the franking league.
NHL head office deemed the deals to be valid when they were faxed in. You can't turn around 3 years later and put in new rules that frank the teams. |

He's owed like $6M this year, $3M next year and another $1M x3 for the last three. He's insured as well, so if its a BS injury, the insurance company might squawk when they have to pay out $12M for a bullsh!t claim.

Trading for Campbell was great.
Picking up Galchenyuk looks good on him.
the Kadri trade can be viewed either way.
I really like the Muzzin trade.
Apparently Dubas made a great presentation on the John Tavares signing.
T J Brodie signing was great.
It hasn't been 100% poop.

Look at that table, if Weber retires (or dies) before that last year of his deal, Preds get a $24M cap hit right up the wazoo. There would be less than $1 M of pre-tax money on the line for him. |
