poop, that's hilarious -- I never thought about ye olde Bernier/Reimer combo being reunited.

The Canes should totally sign Kessel!

Train goes the same route as the trans can unless you pu purposely took another one to go to Edmonton.

The only places Edmonton is on the way to are Fort Mac and the Arctic, you don't casually stop there on the way anywhere.

- joel878

Actually the train from Toronto does go through edmonton.

Yes, reports are that he was willing to take a discount. Sounds like that discount or the term (or a combination of the both) was not something Dubas felt he could or wanted to match.

I hate the Marner contract, I'm not pleased with the "stand pat" narrative he seems to be weaving for next season, and I also feel like Dubas is falling into the trap of building a skill team that succeeds in the regular season but does not have the necessary "truculence" to succeed in the post-season.

I have my issues with Dubas but I don't think this notion of "culture" is one of them.

- mjones242

I dislike the Marner contract a little, there are far worse deals around. If it's the worst deal on the Leafs, the troubles are not that great. It may well be that the JT deal is the worst deal on the Leafs. The problem with long term UFA signings is that you can pay for what the player used to do, and not necessarily what he is going to do. It also is about timing - better players are signing for less because of Covid. Marner will likely improve, but JT is less likely to do so. The truculence you mention is also interesting. It does have something to do with the team assembled by the GM, but certainly the coach also has input. If you play for Trotz and you don't hit, you ride the bench or sit out a game or two, if you don't hit for Keefe, he'll pick up your Latte after the game and make sure he puts in a good word at the presser.

The JT deal makes more sense than Marner's deal.

UFA vs RFA is significant in negotiating.

They both have 4 years left at 11M - if we are comparing contracts, Marner could easily out perform JT in those 4 years.

If the reported offer sheet was similar to what Marner signed for, the Leafs should have surely taken the 4 firsts, but that is a different discussion.

Correct, but intent is hard to determine. RFA's have far more negotiating power than most fans believe. The Leafs overpaid IMO, maybe a million or two.

The fact that Hyman wants to go to poophole Edmonton instead of staying in Toronto, apart from the extra money is an indication as well that he's not very happy with the team culture. Could see how a character guy that works hard, is intelligent and wants to win cost what costs doesn't like the entitlement culture around him.
I hope it works out for him (but what a cost to pay living in Edmonton.... I guess being 50% on the road and having a June-Oct Summer pause where he can train wherever he wants makes up for it to some extent).

- MaximusAurelius

Apart from the extra money - lol. Zach runs ads for an ambulance chasing law firm (I retract that statement if The Law is employed by the fine people at Sokoloff and Clipem), runs a side business and comes from a family in the development or construction or whatever business where you don’t have to hustle at all.

So, I’m guess winning culture was the entire pull and the money was completely irrelevant.

Yeah, very few players (McJesus, AM34, ECHL) have achieved the post-ELC contract plateau that Marner managed.

Hitting the prairies is the best part of the ride. Going through northern Ontario you can’t really see anything because you’re so close to the trees. Every once in a while you rush past a lake for a minute or two and then it’s a wall of trees.

Hitting Manitoba, everything opens up and there’s an actual horizon. Not that there’s anything on that horizon but having a vista was such a relief.

I used to do that trip from Ottawa to Edmonton every summer by myself starting when I was 6. It was almost as if my parents were …. nah, not possible. They loved me.

What happen to all the trades?

Didn't some hockey talking head say that the Kraken had "a lot of trades" coming?

I think Seattle got payback on the media for leaking their entire team yesterday.

Oh, one more question....if Webber is done...how does that play out for Montreal and Nashville on the $ side of things?

Well, they've left it open-ended so that they can claim his LTIR relief rather than being forced to pay the cap repayment penalties.
