Instead of losing 1 asset....they essentially moved out two assets to pick up one assets (which on its own is a good trade) then Seattle takes the asset they brought in.
So 3 assets were lost as result of the Seattle expansion instead of one. But I get it, we dont lose a roster player from last seasons awesome playoff team.

OMFG no.

You have two apples.

You trade the two apples for a Banana.

The (frank)ing lochness monster or some sh!t steals your banana.

You can argue you lost a banana.

You can argue you lost two apples.

You would have to be a complete (frank)ing moron to argue you lost two apples and a banana.

Wait and see. Larsson has been a major disappointment since drafted. Looks like Kraken building based on defense first. They may well pick Dermott ahead of McCann. Wonder what the price is for Dahlin?
- winsix

For a #4 drafted - yes.
I'd say most teams needs a stay at home D 2nd pairing guy at 4x4 though.

How can Seattle sign FA's right now...or did edmonton trade his rights?

I'm still waiting for defenseman Dennis Cholowski's potential. He was drafted in 2016.

I wonder how many takes before that dude slips a fish.

He was left unprotected.

Becuase they signed him, he is their pick from Edmonton.

I think of it as this:

You have an orange that you paid $1 for.

You owe me an orange.

So you go to the store and buy an orange for 50 cents and give me that orange.

What are you out? Are you out an orange and 50 cents?

No, you're just out the 50 cents, and you still have the $1 orange.

- Monkeypunk

I am of the persuasion that if the 50 cent orange was somehow better, younger and cost less on the cap than the 1$ orange... I'm keeping that 50 cent orange and what I paid for it is irrelevant. It's my orange now.

This analogy works if you also don't even bother to value the orange in the first place (because I don't want this analogy to get muddied by, "But what if they pick McCann?") - you're out whatever you paid to get the replacement orange, but you still have an orange; all you've lost is the expense invested in the replacement orange.

I still think it's nothing but a validation exercise to minimize the loss should they lose McCann.

What you had to protect going into expansion was essentially a choice between McCann, Kerfoot, and Holl.

It's not like if they lost Kerfoot everyone would be going perfect they lost Kadri for free in expansion. If it was Andersen we wouldn't be talking Kessel, if it was Muzzin we wouldn't be talking pick and prospects.

How we got there is moot, unless you're trying to downplay the loss.

They had a two day window to negotiate with any UFA's left unprotected. Should they have signed any of them during that window they can use that player as their selection.

Which was always a hair sticky to me. What's to stop them from basically pre negotiating a deal, selecting another player, and signing the player they negotiated with on the first day of UFA. As if an expansion team doesn't have enough advantages these days. 🤦🏻‍♂️

If they wanted first dibs to negotiate they should have had to burn a selection to get it.

Again, your examples you provide dont work with the reality.

Situation is you know Nessy is going to take a specific banana, so you trade two apples for another banana....a possibly more enticing banana.
More than likely Nessy, we'll take that more enticing banana that just cost you two apples.
So you made a nice trade to keep kerfoot....to keep the roster the same.

But we'll see in a few hours.

Apparently they signed Larsson for 4 * 4. I watched a lot of Edmonton over the past few years. I saw nothing in Larsson's game that makes him worth $4m other than being right handed, and a decent skater. I had seriously assumed he was due for a pay cut.

Exactly. Hallander and the 7th didn't require protecting. That much was a voluntary sacrifice.

Whether it was worthwhile or not is an entirely different debate. I think it was if they keep McCann. It's a waste just to keep Kerfoot, but that's just my opinion.

Good opportunistic trade, (frank)ed up on the protection list. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Holy fack that is BS.

Yeah that 650 million gets you a pretty stacked deck. Guaranteed MLSE would dump at least a billion at this point for those kind of perks. 🤣

If they keep McCann...it was for sure. Nice plan.
If they lose McCann.....not worth it at all. They had an opportunity to free up some cap space and missed
