That's not the math in this case.
Leafs gave up Hallander & a 7th to keep Kerfoot.
So the question is ... do you not think Kerfoot is not worth Hallander and a 7th? - Nasty_Duck
I'm with you man.
We have spent two+ days in here trying to convince others this is the case.
My post was acknowledging that some will simply not get it and will continue to argue that the Leafs gave up Mccann/Hallander/7th to keep Kerfoot.

Can only lose one of Kerfoot or Mccann. So you are either deciding to lose Kerfoot/Mccann or Holl.
Either way. Great trade. Poor choice on the protection list as far as I'm concerned. - Leafs43
I agree. |

I guess my take is that I hear (and contribute to) about $100M or so in spending ideas in here that the Leafs absolutely need to be competitive: power forwards all over the place, goalie, etc.
Muzzin-Holl works. I just don’t get why we want to take a chance and hope we can plug somebody in there on their wrong side and cross our fingers or hit the market and add another item to the shopping list.
I get it that Muzzin carries the pairing but unless we’re prepared to write a really big cheque for someone that’s going to be the case.
So, for suddenly stud Hallander, we keep a 20 minute, $2M guy and have 2 serviceable 3 line guys to be used or traded depending on who Seattle picks. |

I just assumed that Larsson would get Brodie-type money, no?
Leafs would have to really skimp on the needs up front and/or in net if they are adding AAV to the blue line. - The Law
I don't think they need to skimp up front. Dubas has already saved 600k on Simmonds, and if somehow Seattle takes Kerfoot there's another 600k on that end. Take Holls 2 million out and you have 3.2 for that spot already.
This is without the exchange from Andersens 5 million to a 1B salary. 4 million on the second pair isn't tough to come up with.
Of course it's a different variation of the same gotta have a few dart throws approach we have every year, but I'd say that's the reality of rolling heavy at forward and they seem set on that. |

I am fine with keeping Holl and keeping that pairing together. I agree - the results are good for 7.5 million.
I'd rather they still spend more on a defenseman who can play in the top 4 - even if they end up playing third line with Sandin. Gives us depth, and provides insurance in case of injury.
We are really rolling the dice if we go cheap on defense and goaltending this year.
Regarding the forwards:
24 million is plenty to allocate to the 1st line. Marner/Matthews took up 22.5. So now they get to make due with a 1.5 millionish plug.
18 million is plenty to allocate to the second line. Tavares/Nylander already make that - so now they get to deal with a league minimum plug.
Just how I see it.

Mccann has shown he can play 3C very well.
Scores points higher in the lineup.
Kerfoot can PK but Mccann can play on the PP and is better defensively 5v5.
He fits better on the Leafs although they will need to find 2 new players that can PK with Kerfoot and Hyman gone.
They still grab a C I think. I am watching Dvorak who is a 2nd line 2 way C. - Santo_44
McCann has averaged more PKTOI than Kerfoot so maybe he's a fit on the PK? Not so sure about him playing "very well" on 3C but he has some experience there.
Dvorak would be nice on 3C but that contract likely won't fit. Be fun to see him reconnect* with Mitch though.
* but I'd rather it happen with Mitch going to ARZ |

Muzzin-Holl 5v5
53% of the shots on goal
55.6% of the expected goals
Outscored opposition 42-30
Started in offensive zone 46% of the play
Find a $2M replacement - Canada Cup
Cool.
Not sure what that has to do with willie and Marner. |

wouldnt shock me if they took Engvall.
it would also be a funny option since everyone spent the last 4 days taking about mccann/kerfoot/holl |

I just want to see the top lines play a different style and think someone with some size and speed would facilitate that. I’m not convinced Matthews and Marner should stay together.
Bottom line, apart from the money I don’t want to fix what isn’t broken and move new pieces where they’re needed.
