They could have gotten all the cap space and kept a pick and a prospect, seems weird to me that's all.

Kerfoot for Kuemper 50% salary retained. ARZ save a lot of money over 2 years and get a higher cap hit to keep them above the floor.

If this trade happens this move would not be possible without the McCanns trade.

Kuemper actual money in 50% retained=3.25M

Kerfoot=700K, 1.9M next season

They gain 6.750M in cap this season, 3.5M next season

I don't think they need to skimp up front. Dubas has already saved 600k on Simmonds, and if somehow Seattle takes Kerfoot there's another 600k on that end. Take Holls 2 million out and you have 3.2 for that spot already.

This is without the exchange from Andersens 5 million to a 1B salary. 4 million on the second pair isn't tough to come up with.

Of course it's a different variation of the same gotta have a few dart throws approach we have every year, but I'd say that's the reality of rolling heavy at forward and they seem set on that.

Holl's play seemed to slip as the season progressed and as opponents started to tighten up their game.

Your thoughts regarding the potential 3.2M we could use to spend on a superior Top 4 defender (Oleksiak?) is very well stated.

We're putting a lot of faith in Holl and I think a lot of if it has to do with Muzzin carrying that pairing -and- falling in love with Holl's contract.

For me there's two different debates here.

On the first one, I don't spend assets to shield Kerfoot. He had a good playoffs, his 54 games before that were meh like they always are. At 3.5 I think the money could be used better. I let it be and I move on.

But then the trade happens, and I like the trade. It's opportunistic and good value, but it creates the second debate.

Which is at that point... I keep McCann and Kerfoot. I let them take Holl (which at that point Seattle has so many options on defence I don't think they take Holl to spend 2 million on an 8th D, they look at Engvall). I do so knowing Kerfoot is a trade chip through the summer.

In my perfect (little) world, we have McCann and Holl post expansion, and Kerfoot to shop for a winger, upgrade on the second pair... Or picks and prospects.

But armchair GM'ing is the best kind of GM'ing. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Holl works. Why spend another 1.5M if we have something that works and forward spots that don't work? Only so much cap space to go around we have to makeshift some spots.
