Did Vegas' 1st-year team look that competitive on paper just based on their expansion selections? Not really. Neal, Perron and MAF were the only real "stars".

A third of their selections never suited up a single game for them. Many others were gone after just a year or two. I suspect Seattle will be picking a bunch of guys that they want to flip as well, instead of solely focusing on getting the best players available. They gotta build out their asset base after all.

- Tomahawk

An example is Mark Giordano. He's on an expiring contract. You take him and flip him at the deadline for a future asset.

Marchessault wasn't exactly a household name at the time.

Tuch, Theodore and Smith were all trades. I don't think many Seattle mock drafts are actually simulating side deals.

- Tomahawk

They also aren't simulating FA deals. I could absolutely see them saving cap space by taking cheap contracts so they could sign Dougie Hamilton and Landeskog (name him captain) right out of the gate.

Honestly, I wouldn't be shocked if they grabbed Haag

In a flat cap environment, using LTIR is problematic. Especially if you have good young player on EL deals.
- MJL

Can you explain to me why it's problematic?

why would any team give up a 4th for 12/13th fwd? Every organization has these types in spades.

They draft 2 quality goalies. Then grab Sandstrum to groom him. Wouldn't that be some funny schit.

If NAK is on the opening night roster and commits the countless dumb penalties like he did last year…. He better be benched. Loved his play in 19-20. But in 20-21 he played such a dumb game.

He was very effective that year, exactly the type of player the flyers needed on that line. Last year....not so much.

But Patrick indicated Monday he was dealing with concussion symptoms while sitting out.

“Injuries are part of the game, and my concussion was obviously the tough one keeping me out that long,” Patrick said. “It was pretty scary times, but happy to be healthy now.”

I fully expect him to be waived again at some point. If he isn't traded.

There are no guarantees in trades….did the Flyers know John Leclair would turn into a perennial 50 goal scorer when they traded for hIm ? Not a chance. Do the Flyers know Ellis will stay healthy? No….or are they 100 % sure Patrick won’t all of a sudden figure it out ? Of course not….but what we do know is what we watched last year with the current group…and that just didn’t work.

John LeClair was told he was playing with Eric Lindros before he got on the plane to Philadelphia. I think the Flyers knew something.

That small sample size was an anomaly imo. Turned back into to the pumpkin.

They knew that he was a big guy who could be a net front presence and take some of the physical pressure off of Lindros. That is well documented.

Yes any team would benefit from speed, toughness and players that shoot the puck. And a lot of teams have this already. Unfortunately this Flyers does not, and that is CFs job to fix this off season. Now since you got upset that I didn't understand your A and B scenarios, let me address them here:

I don't agree with your evaluation of last season, plain and simple. True the Flyers had a down year and its true there were a lot of players that, even coming into the season, I thought were not part of the solution on this team. But G tried his butt off last year for the most part, as did several other players like Provorov. Hart was impacted by Covid and the isolation, he is a young kid and that happens. I have full confidence that he will rebound. As far as your last statement I bolded, that is just nonsense. You apparently are not paying attention to the players in the Flyers system to make a statement like this. Foerster, Allison, York all showed great signs and Frost just had an unfortunate injury. Its very true that the Flyers need to fill several holes as I outlined earlier, but I don't think they are far away as you state here.

Here we go again, back to where we are picking in the draft. Its a flawed argument on your part that I and MJL have disproved countless times now. You need to get over this idea that if you pick in the 20s in the 1st round your are doomed and will never get a good player. Yet G was drafted 23rd, so was Pastrnak and TK, and I am sure countless others if I felt like researching it. Again you can find players all over the place in the draft, if you know how to pick players and develop them. You don't need scary players to win, you need very good to great players to win, and too many teams that have won the Cup have drafted these types of players all over the place!

- jd250

I didn't "get upset". I was referring to the fact that if you don't engage in breaking up the Ellis trade into 2 parts: near future, and thereafter, you will not be able to see the perspective of those against it.

Regarding your comments to A: I did not say Flyers will not improve from last season. I said they are extremely unlikely to win the cup in the next 3 years. I also asked for an reasonable, odds based rebuttal.

You respond by countering my examples of Barzal/Hesikanen/Hedman etc with 3 players who have each played <15 games in the NHL and who nobody projects will be stars, let alone superstars. You should be doing stand up,, JD250.

As for your and MJL "disproving" "my" argument, my man, this is far from my argument. This is common sense, not a controversial topic and outside of the types you find on sports boards, the rest of the world has moved on.

Here is a chart from the Athletic about odds of drafting an impact player by draft position. There are zillions of such charts. Notice how exponentially it drops, reflecting the fact that odds of getting a star player drop precipitously after the first few picks.

All I said was how low the odds are of Flyers contending with the Ellis trade. I saw nothing from you even remotely approaching a rational rebuttal.

When using LTIR, you are essentially out of cap space and are over the upper limit. If you have players with performance bonuses and they meet those bonuses. That will result in carryover cap space to be applied to the following season.
