Kind of a head scratcher exposing JVR in the expansion draft. We just invested in Ryan Ellis so it appears the Flyers are going for the Cup now. Then leave JVR unprotected?

The only thing that makes sense to me is the Flyers want to free up cap space at pretty much any cost. Maybe big plans for that cap space?

- dubc55

Yes, that is what it seems like. However, if the plan was to expose all the high dollar contracts with the hope that Seattle takes one without a sweetener, I would have traded or protected Bunnaman.

Fletcher will just have to work it out.

I know most are laughing…just being honest.

Our luck they take Morin or Rubstov

Not a chance. Seattle arena is already fully staffed with janitors.

To the people complaining about Ellis’s health:

Both Patrick and Myers have consistently had injuries in their careers lol.

Couldn’t be Myers hockey sense. I was told his hockey iq wasn’t the question mark by other posters. Lol.

NAK being protected. Interesting.

I know you arent a fan of this trade. Who would you have preferred we traded to get a 1RHD?
- bradster

I would have protected Giroux, Hayes, Couturier, Laughton, Konency, Lindblom and Patrick at forward. Provorov, Sanheim and Myers on defense. Hart in net.

With this deal we’re protecting Aube-Kubel. Why? I couldn’t tell you. In fact we’re now protecting two players I wish we didn’t have to in Hayes and NAK.

I would have waited to see who Settle takes from us and hoped it’s one of JvR, Voracek or Ghost, who seem to be the most likely. After this, I would have addressed holes.

People around here talk as if Ryan Ellis is the only deal that had to be made. I don’t think Chuck has been that great of a GM since coming here. I had much higher expectations for Vigneault who also hasn’t found that second, third or fourth gear on this team yet. I would have gave Patrick and Myers another year to workout their issues.

It’s just the same old thing. The Flyers become impatient. Dump a young guy. Young guy moves on to have success elsewhere.

With the Canadians exposing Price I feel like Seattle would be crazy not to take him. That contract however makes it much less likely they’re going to be willing to take a Jake or JVR. My gut feeling has been Hagg all along. I do think Ghost offers a skill set no other team is exposing but that contract doesn’t seem to be doing him any favors.

Let’s just pray the front office doesn’t do something dumb and try to get Seattle to trade us Price for Voracek, Hart +

- hereticpride

I am pleasantly surprised that Habs exposed Price. He was by far the most important component in their run. I am also pleasantly surprised they did not offer more for Ellis to fill in the Weber gap, since they got much closer to cup obviously.

They seem to have done the rarest of things. Been honest with themselves and recognize that they are further away than last season would suggest and that Price's contract, term and age means he is not part of the time when they are more realistic contenders.

Don’t mind exposing JVR. We have so many wingers coming up. That money can be better allocated.

I’m still at about 90% that they take Hagg or Ghost.

That's not the point. The point is Ellis being paid 6.25mil for the next 6 years with injury problems. We're assuming some risk here whether you'd like to admit it or not.

Do you think Nashville just gave away a supposed star #1 RHD for Glass and Myers?

Like JVR, underrated but I do think there is a plan. I think they need a shooter more than JVR. They have the big bodies for net front, they don’t have the shooter or speed. As long as the space is used to replace JVR with those type of players, I get it

Dream scenario Seattle takes JVR or Voracek and the Flyers sign Dougie Hamilton.
- PLindbergh31

Ok, so you build that dream defense. Are you comfortable with our current group of forwards? Keep in mind, we’re choosing to protect Hayes, Laughton and Aube-Kubel.

It’s not so much about protecting NAK as they wanted to expose JVR. NAK just got lucky. He shouldn’t even be on the opening night roster.

We aren’t choosing to protect Hayes lol. He has a NMC. They protected NAK to expose JVR for cap relief to make other moves lol

Of course they did -- they are a bunch of goobers running a hockey team in the south

With the current roster mix, they aren't going to be able to fix/address everything in one year.

In fact Nashville had so much faith in Patrick they moved him right away for Cody Glass, who is another young player with good upside but hasn't shown it yet in this league. This should make Flyers fans even happier, no know there are other GMs that see the same thing we do in regards to Patrick. Now in Vegas, if it doesn't work out for Patrick there, he can quickly transition and become a nightclub act
- jd250

How about the GM in Vegas? Why did he trade for Patrick. Also by the way, Ellis is not better than Kimmo Timonen.

Is he better than you preached AMac to be? Because if so you should really stop complaining about this trade.

Everyone feared patrick was a single hit away from being retired. I’m not saying there’s no risk nor that Ellis is a star. But Patrick was far riskier (injury wise) and Myers was the true cost to land him. Honestly surprised we didn’t have to give more up

I like Ellis, he's a good player. He's from my hometown, I've been cheering for Ellis since his junior days. Definitely a good pick up given the direction the Flyers management wants to go. I'm not a fan of the contract length nor his injury history though.
- dubc55

His contract length and injury history is what I think made him available in the first place. If he wasn't injured and his contract didn't run til age 36 I think he would have cost a little more than Myers and nopa but I am a huge Ellis fan. I live in Nashville so I have watched him for years. Very solid player! I think chuck made a helluva move to make this happen

Yes, this point is strange how infrequently it is made.

Why didn't Montreal, with a glaring need for a RHD, offer more? Why didn't Florida, up-and-coming, take him on to partner with Ekblad instead of Stralman?

I'm not particularly high on either player the Flyers gave up, so I don't have an issue with the trade. Sure, the term on Ellis' deal isn't the best but he makes the Flyers better. We all want Fletcher to improve the current team right? He just did that. Lets see what the expansion draft, entry draft and FA have in store. The Flyers are under construction right now with more moves to come. Lets see what else they add.
