JVR is as good as gone then. If not by Seattle then I think CF has a trade ready to be announced.
It's a shane because JVR elevated his game and was much more of a complete player while also putting up points

- Bob Habib

I don't think so. Don't forget he is a year removed from being a healthy playoff scratch. When JVR isn't scoring he doesn't offer much else.

The last couple years of Ellis' deal could be ugly, no question. If he plays well for 4 years and stays healthy it will be good. He's a better player than Niskanen.
- PLindbergh31

Sure but bringing in Niskanen complicated the team, not took from. We might be keeping Ghost, who I would have sold high on. Myers if you believe there is still potential, you move forward with that potential. Now we have to move forward again with Ghost’s high’s and low’s.

Price is due an 11 million dollar signing bonus in September. I think that will deter Seattle from taking him.

I think Seattle just takes Braun or Hagg leaving the Flyers with no cap relief.

Depends. There is a chance Seattle takes Gostisbehere. If not maybe a trade where the Flyers retain salary. Gostisbehere needs a change of scenery. He's run his course in Philly.

Not only this but he just turned 30. It’s the same concerns when we signed Kevin Hayes where you know the player should be at least good for the first half of his deal but sooner or later age will catch up. All Ryan Ellis’ success came from his 20’s. I’m not saying this year Ellis will be bad or even the following season. I’m saying everyone slows down, hints Jake and G, which most want to move on from. Also the names of Mark Howe and Kimmo Timonen were just brought up. I know the blog says he’s not comparing him to those two players but the names still came up, which is high praise. Maybe even too high. Provorov is supposed to be our guy. Timonen was our guy who was an All-Star and connected to Norris voting most seasons.

I know you arent a fan of this trade. Who would you have preferred we traded to get a 1RHD?

I will say this. Looking at the list of non protected players, Seattle is going to be very good immediately. Just like Vegas. I hate that expansion teams are set up to be 90+ point playoff contenders in year 1. Franchises should go through growing pains. It's too easy for them to be good right away. Garbage.
- PLindbergh31

I agree, they can have an amazing team right off the bat. Pretty ridiculous. I'm not saying they have to start off as a complete dumpster fire, but c'mon.

You don't think his 2 way game improved at all the past 2 seasons?! I've seen huge change in his play away from the puck. He back checks now, he gets his stick in the way of opponents, he doesn't use his size the way we want him to but he was definitely more assertive as well.
I may see him differently than some do but I thought he was solid.
You are right that he was benched for parts of 19/20 but I think he learned from that and changed his game and was rewarded for it

it did improve. He played well last year. If Seattle takes him it opens up a hole, but it gives the Flyers some cap space to be players in free agency.

Draft picks and some retained salary. Boom. Done.
- Glak18

Which teams have the cap space to send picks and retain his 7.5 million salary? Again, if st Louis has to retain salary, they may not want to do so and would be better by adding an impact player like JV.
Plus, in typical former flyer fashion, if JV does go to st Louis then they now have a much greater chance or winning a cup since a former flyer now plays for them. Don't forget that aspect too 😂
Dear God I hope they can move JV and his salary this off-season. I wouldn't offer a 1st round pick for Seattle to take him but I'd throw a 2022 second round pick out there as a sweetener just for the cap space

You're right and cap space is the greatest thing to have in this climate right now but I don't see JVR as someone who is easily replaced.
Our power play is already garbage... Imagine of they take away our biggest power play goal scorer.
Plus I like what JVR did for young Beezer and his game. That line was on fire for a while
Again, is offer a 2022 second round pick to Seattle if they take Jake and allow us to keep JVR.
I also think JVR at 2 million retention should get us a first round pick in a trade, if it gets to that point

I'm glad I am not the only one who wants to keep JVR. He has really upped his game the last two seasons. I hope he remains a flyer because, as you said, he is a great locker room presence and an example to the younger kids.
Fingers crossed he is still here at the start of the season

- Bob Habib

Kind of a head scratcher exposing JVR in the expansion draft. We just invested in Ryan Ellis so it appears the Flyers are going for the Cup now. Then leave JVR unprotected?

The only thing that makes sense to me is the Flyers want to free up cap space at pretty much any cost. Maybe big plans for that cap space?

I want to know the answer to this question to. Whoever is upset we gave up on NoPa's "potential" is lost. Myers for Ellis is a no brainer. I would love to hear other possible trades that don't include moving on from Sanheim, Frost, Konecny, picks etc.

We can only hope that CF has plans. If losing JVR means we get Hamilton or savard then by all means...I love JVR but that's a no brainer to let JVR go to lock up a d unit like that.
If CF has those plans ready to go then I am on board with losing JVR.
Maybe CF has a solid plan in place. So far his Ellis move has impressed me big time so I have faith in CF

Provorov, Ellis, Sanheim, Ghost, York, Hagg and Braun are our current 7. If you take Ghost away, this opens up the idea of Hagg and Braun being every night guys. Ellis may work wonders for the top pair but he’ll likely change nothing for the bottom two. We’ll just move forward with the same issues, using the same players.

I like Ellis, he's a good player. He's from my hometown, I've been cheering for Ellis since his junior days. Definitely a good pick up given the direction the Flyers management wants to go. I'm not a fan of the contract length nor his injury history though.

They need a “sniper” they need a guy that consistently puts the puck in the net. They haven’t had one of these type players in a long time.
- PLindbergh31

I remember a column by Bill Lyon, back in the day, when we signed Amonte. He said the exact same thing.

I can see them adding a sweetner for JVR with us getting a young backup G in return

I wouldn’t say I’m “giddy”. But I also think it’s was time to be aggressive. I’ve been saying it for 5 years. Not because I disagreed with the Hextall plan, but because they could afford to do both….chew gum and walk at the same time. I thought they owed it to a Giroux and Vorecek in their prime to at least attempt to add some proven players….some around love to announce…why make moves, we are not a contender, we are TWO years away….it’s really laughable and shows a complete lack of what pro sports are. You don’t have to trade young guys for old guys….you can make hockey trades. You can trade good payer and get good players back that are a better fit….Hextall didn’t seem to grasp that and I was “giddy” when they finally fired him. Not because I disliked the Flyer legend, but because he allowed the Flyers to lose their identity I grew up loving and become just “another” team. I hope Fletch isn’t done and from yesterday’s comments I don’t think he is.

Much though I like you, I also speak my mind at the post without looking at poster (and don't hold it against anyone when they reciprocate), and your post above should be in the Flyersbuzz HOF for sheer, unadulterated stupidity.

Well done, sir.

So you are saying NoPa was a throw-in for Ellis, If that is the case why not send NoPa to Vegas for Glass and Myers for Ellis straight up?

To the people complaining about Ellis’s health:

Both Patrick and Myers have consistently had injuries in their careers lol.

And that is without having a “sniper” on the team at any point. I am also fine with Voracek moving on.
- mickel25

Mickel25, Tomahawk, MJL and all others in the draft-and-develop and be patient camp: note your folly. Even if we agree that that is the best way to build a champ (and you guys know I strongly disagree), the point is moot. Big market teams like Flyers never have the patience to commit to it, so business reasons make that strategy a non-starter.

I am afraid the only two valid ones worth considering are the concentrated pain of a rebuild and the trade-like-a-nutjob one which we always fall back on.
