I'm personally a big fan of Myers. I think last year was an outlier for him and for the team as a whole. Some are not fans of Myers. I get that. So does Nashville really think Myers is going to be really good? Possible. In terms of current level of play, Nashville couldn't do better than this deal on the open market for a player like Ellis? They went the 4-4 route in the ED. They didn't trade him for cap or ED reasons.
- MJL

They must really believe in Myers and Glass to pull off the trade. If both guys play anywhere near their potential, the trade probably looks pretty good for NSH in hindsight.

Ellis will miss time, it’s what time he misses, Kuch showed us that. The Flyers need to be deep enough to be a playoff team and Ellis needs to miss small and the right stretches.

So sit him out for the regular season all 6 years and have him come back for the POs?

i think this is an extremely fair way of looking at it.

Its the only rational way to look at it, really.

It'll probably look pretty bad for the Flyers in 3-4 years. If they haven't won a Cup in that span, they're gonna have to eat BOs on Hayes and Ellis just to stay competitive.

Myers is gonna be great for Nashville. Pretty much a the perfect landing spot for him. Partnering w/ Josi or Ekholm? He must be over the moon.

- Tomahawk

Are you sure it won't be Matt Benning he is partnering?

If it gets you a cup, sure. But seriously, you just hope he misses the right games and Flyers are deep enough to win still

Yeah, Nashville has been kind of a gold standard identifying and developing D men. It seems they see something in Myers that no one else does or they know something about Ellis that no one else does.

Actually I do think you should make a list. Keep in mind, Ellis isn’t a future Hall of famer or a contender for the Norris. So be careful with your list.
- SuperSchennBros

Suter, Burns, Kopitar, Kessel, Pavelski, Vlasic, Kane, Jordan Staal, Giroux, Backstrom, Stastny, Greene, Doughty, Krejci, Giordano, Edler, Bailey, Wheeler, Benn, Letang, Oshie, Stalman, Pacioretti, Marchand, Carlson, Karlsson, Chara, Leddy, Eberle, Couture, Backlund, Petry, McDonaugh, Spurgeon, Josi, Martinez, Dillon, Muzzin, Killorn, Tatar, Atkinson, Savard, Cole, Ekholm, Maroon, Rask, Bellemare, Radulov.

This is just among successful active players that are 30+. If we go back in time like you did I can name even more players who played very well late into their 30s. But I think you get the point.

In 5 years time, we will have Couts: 33/34, Hayes 34/35 and Ellis 35/36. Together, they will account for at least 22m. They will by that time (very likely) not be top line or top pairing.

Given the revenue losses incurred recently, cap in 5 years is likely to be about say 88m.

Name me one team that has been serious contenders with 25% of the cap devoted to 3 players in mid 30s not playing top line/pairing.

- PT21

Well you can easily take coots out of that equation by trading him now and getting a decent return. I know I know we can’t trade the almighty ex selke finished 15th last year sarcasm at the not realizing crowd about age/cup contender

If there was any chance of that happening, and we know there wasn't, it vanished yesterday.

He would be an amazing foundation to build a team on. Like what Vegas got out of MAF in the first couple of seasons. Except better.
- Tomahawk

But the cap hit is 10.5M/5yrs and MAF hit was more manageable. My son is on Insta and says Price’s wife is there saying ‘everybody will understand and everything gonna be alright.’ We shall see.

Nashville protected 5 D-men 3 forwards.
I think they are the only team to do this.

Unloading Ellis and his 6 years remaining contract played a role in the Flyers giving up only Myers and Patrick.

They have 18-19 players who are RFA or FA this summer and next summer.

Including needing a backup goalie for Saros this summer and losing a player in the expansion draft. That makes it about 20 players they need to resign or replace.

Nashville wanted the cap space. They have a ton of moves/signings to deal with.

There's no doubt about that. But 6-years is a long time. Who knows what he'll look like in years 4, 5, and 6.
- Tomahawk

Fair enough. As I said Im hoping by that time the cap is higher, and that we have players like York and Zemula playing big roles. Its a danger for every team to have an overpaid veteran or two or three. You just hope that even if he declines he is still effective in a lesser role and in the locker room.

He is an effective player now, and no reason to think he wont be for the next 3 or 4 years.

Nobody said Ellis is a hall of famer. But I will quickly embarrass you. Let me make a list The whole point is people like you female dog about every player that is 30 saying that they will suck balls because they are way too old when it's just a completely false sense of reality.
- Richieattack18

I’m waiting for the list…

Let’s not forget Niskanen chose to retire at 33. Just saying.

Yes. 🤷

Btw, nice article about the apparent paradox of why Leafs traded for McCann then exposed him.

What exactly is your point? It seems like you have this 1975 mentality where players once they reached 30 were considered over the hill.

Its 2021, its not the same. 30 is not old in the NHL any more.

I agree the cost was good but calling them their worst players is out of line IMO. That ignores their potential which is the sole reason the other teams involved made the trades
- wcorvette

I'm not talking about potential, I'm saying last year Patrick and Myers were two of the Flyers worst players. I mean, you can't possibly argue this, can you?

Nonsense, its not going to happen. If these are such good players, then why don't either of them play good?? And don't give me crap that they are still young. There are too many young players (19,20 and 21 years old) that come into this league and light it up for me to be worried about their potential. I for one am sick of potential, and would rather watch good players play hockey!

Ya, you can trade Couts to Boston, since I'm sure they would love to have Couts step right into Bergeron's shoes and give them more of that for 8 years! Really, you need to change the record here. The Flyers do NOT need to tank to be contenders. They just need to clear out crap and space and get some good players. They took step 1 yesterday.
