Oh come on, no he was not a significantly better player. I think Ellis is better offensively and as good all around. Maybe Kimmo was more physical, but if so barely. I think you need to give Ellis more credit here, he is really good.

He would be an amazing foundation to build a team on. Like what Vegas got out of MAF in the first couple of seasons. Except better.

Haha. Schenn, you know he just turned 30 right. Of course all his success came in his 20’s🤣🤣🤣
- peesinwind

So we’re in agreement because this is my point. From here on and moving forward, Ellis will be on the wrong side of 30.

Flyers getting an A from most of the pundits on the trade. I think it was a slam dunk and am frankly shocked all it took was Myers and Patrick.
- MBFlyerfan

It’s a great trade. But if you take the long view, like say 5 years, how does it look? Someone in Nashville is seeing something in Myers that Philly doesn’t see.

He may be, but I don't think it is that big an issue if at all. If he were 32, 33, I may have reservations, but he is 30. IMO he has 4 or 5 good years left.

As an aside, I always forget Kimmo was 32 when we acquired him and he was good for a while.

In 5 years the cap should be rising again and the contract wont be so bad. At worst we have Ryan Ellis playing on the 3rd pair in a leadership role.

I really like Kimmo, but during his 7 seasons with the Flyers Kimmo never scored 10 goals or more and only had 3 season with over 40 points. Kimmo was an all around very good defenseman, but so is Ryan Ellis. I believe if he stays healthy, Ellis could put up 50 points for the Flyers.
- jd250

So to you, a great defenseman is purely based on a defenseman’s offense? Shea Weber in my opinion the most unappreciated defenseman in the league with multiple nominations for the Norris only to fall short to Lidstrom or Chara. Weber has never put up more than 56 points in a season, which can also be considered low.

It'll probably look pretty bad for the Flyers in 3-4 years. If they haven't won a Cup in that span, they're gonna have to eat BOs on Hayes and Ellis just to stay competitive.

Myers is gonna be great for Nashville. Pretty much a the perfect landing spot for him. Partnering w/ Josi or Ekholm? He must be over the moon.

I am not a Hamilton fan and don't want to commit that kind of money to that player. If you know anything about what I posted in the past you know that I don't want status quo. I just think the Flyers can fix their defense with two very good players versus one so called elite player, and that leaves cap space to fill other holes at forward and in goal.
- jd250

No I get it. We definitely can upgrade a few dmen but generally speaking the teams that win cup have elite type talent at 1d.

I view Ellis and provy as that perfect compliment piece to the big talent 1d.

Is our d Corp even with another mild upgrade good enough? Possibly. I guess.

Here’s Voracek in a nutshell. Unforced egregious turnovers in all three zones. Lack of defense, and back checking that lead to GAA. How can you make that kind of money, be considered a leader and a playmaker, and frequently make these types of plays. His decision making is some of the worst I’ve ever seen in a player who’s supposed to be high caliber.

- pharcyde

I won't and can't argue any of this. He has had poor leadership skills along with his one dimensional skill set. We also, as a team, have not used him to the what if his strengths. We have no sniper or pure goal scorer to put his passes into the net.with that said, it's time to move on and he is not a core piece here

There is no way this trade goes down without the flat cap. It just is super we didn’t have to throw in a pick with this trade. This salary dump from the Preds is fantastic for the Flyers.

It will probably be at least 5 years before Philly will be a serious contender. If Myers develops like Nashville thinks he will, it would be nice to have him.

Dunno, the cap rising didn't exactly make AMac's contract any less odious toward the end. Not saying Ellis is Amac, just saying that 6M+ will always be a big % of the cap. AMac's 5M cap hit would still be a nasty albatross, even today.

So there is no right side of 30? Think the wrong side of 30 would be over 35 lol. 30 is young. Stop being nuts.

I think we both agree. Up to this point all his success was in his 20’s because that is all he played in the NHL. But I know what you mean. I was just kidding. I know what you meant.

But many Defenders play some of their best hockey into their 30’s. I’m hoping your wrong of course because I drink the Flyers’ cool aid like my favorite beer.

Can you win a cup with three 1b dmen and another legitimate top 4 dman? I think you have a better chance to win with 4 very good dmen instead of 1 elite dman and 3 mediocre dmen.
- jd250

Yeah can’t just roll with 1 elite dman and rest mediocre. I mean you might be able to with 2 elite like ducks did (prong/neider) you have to still have good dmen.
I think if philly lands a true #1 man their d would be absolutely stacked for a long time. At least back end and I think hart definitely the real deal in net. The reason I really like dougie is don’t have to give up the assets. Cap issues over the next 2 years clears up with ghost g Jvr going away. Who knows with Ed. Lots holes filled now if we get dougie. We’re looking at just getting that 1c then fill in little holes to put over the top

I know. Easier said then done

So you're basing it on what you believe? What is this belief based on since Ellis has only scored 40 or more points once in his career?

Colorado (with the trade of Graves) has Makar, Toews and Girard. They are significantly better than Ellis, Provorov and Savard? Tampa I will give you. My point is there are maybe two teams with a better top 4 than the Flyers with the addition or either Larsson or Savard IMO.
- jd250

No there's more. We don't know what many teams complete D core at this point will be. There is still Carolina, Vegas and others.

Nashville has plenty of cap space. They didn't make this deal because they needed the space.
