We'll know more tomorrow when the protected lists are publicized.

I love how most everyone is saying we are losing a forward. This pretty much tells me Seattle is taking either Pettersson or Matheson.

Hearing that Carey Price has waived his no-move for purpose of exposure in the expansion draft so that the Habs could protect Jake Allen in the expansion draft. The thought is that Seattle wouldn’t want to pick up the rest of Price’s hefty contract. But I guess we will see

Hard to say, Aside from that playoff run, it's not like Price has been amazing in the last couple of years

Totally agree. Just still surprising to see a player of that caliber (in his career) in that market, left exposed

I'm not saying he's WORTH it

I'm saying that's what he'd get in arbitration

He gets to use similar overpaid players contracts as compatibles, so, knowing that he has no future beyond 2021 with the Penguins, Hex/Burke chose to unload him now for nothing so that can allocate the 3 million in Free Agency to a player THEY DO want to move forward with in 2021 and beyond

That's why you move him now and not "later" for more value

Free Agency starts in a week

- TheGame316

This is a different argument. If you move McCann because he won't be here next year because of a raise you don't want to pay and you want to use that money on a player you plan on having longer term, then the same idea applies to Rust.

You are moving McCann because you don't think he will help you this year as much as gaining cap space. Which I still disagree with, but wasn't the argument.

I simply said moving him because he's due a raise next year shouldn't factor in. You could just as easily say McCann's salary next year will go to raises for guys like Kapanen.

It's likely Francis told him he was taking Jake Allen unless Bergy ponied up some picks and this is Bergy thinking he's clever by blocking it and exposing Price

With Holtby as 3rd goalie?

But just regarding this year. Who steps in if Carter or Sid is injured before Malkin returns?

They may have other options for Malkin's PP spot, but wouldn't McCann have made sense since he clearly fit?

What else does he add besides a guy that had 32 points in 43 games as mostly a bottom 6? Play-driving. Being one of the few decent defensive forwards in the top 9.

With Malkin out, Pens have 3 holes in the top 9, 4 if Zucker is moved. Maybe they find better value, it's possible. But it's not a move I'd have made.

Price is from British Columbia.

NHL Network reported Seattle is working on Florida 'tender Chris Driedger (UFA). Not a bad combo.

It has more to do with the team not seeing a future with him. He's always going to be a 3rd liner here. Does it make sense to pay him MORE if he'll likely never have an elevated role? I'll put it this way, had he knocked on Hexy's door and said, I'll take 5 years for my current salary, I bet they'd figure out a way to keep him, but since they knew he wasn't going to be a Pen beyond this year, it already got them thinking ahead

Once the decisions been made that he isn't part of your cores future there isn't any real need to keep the player any longer. It's a "get busy living or get busy dying" kinda thing. Just move on now and whatever you would have done next year, just do that this year

Rust may well, be viewed as part of the future, but even if he isn't, he fills a more valuable and harder to replace need right now. If an opportunity presented itself in Free Agency for a better long term fit and the only way to make it work was to ship out Rust for pucks, then you just do it regardless of the return and sign the new guy

I agree. I think they’ll target someone with C/W versatility. Coleman/Jarnkrok as some have mentioned.

And then Francis tricks him because Price was his original target and now he got Montreal to leave him unprotected.

If I'm Seattle, I'm taking Price. I know he is owed a lot of money and it probably wont be justified in future years... but if you want your team to be buzzing in that area from Day 1... taking the guy that just led his team to a Stanley Cup appearance would be the way to do it.

I’m probably in the minority thinking this could be a good idea.(read about 2 sentences of the blog) Main reasons being
-it was as recent as yesterday and over the last 2 months everyone wanted cap space to “take advantage of the bargains with a flat cap”
-If I was GM I’d wanna be doing exactly what I thought was right to change the team instead of hitting the same wall 5 years straight with basically the same truck expecting different results and saying it was “unlucky” it didn’t break every time
-if Hextall used his phone over the past 2 weeks I’m sure he has a good idea about possible trades, free agents, expansion etc to get the players he wants
-my guess is still Seattle takes Zucker and seeing Leddy get moved for a 2nd opening up 4+ more mill makes me think Pettersson can be moved very easily to which would be around 13-14 mill to make changes
-I liked mccann and especially at that value but do you wait another year and watch him score 0 goals in a 1st round loss and just call it being unlucky again? We are wanting Jarry and Zucker gone for brief bad appearances so why not Mccann???
-14 mill to spend to get 3 of these players and I’d be happy. Landeskog, Hall, Hyman, Coleman, Schwartz, saad, granlund, tatar, Suter, mike Reilly, oleksiak and that’s without naming any trade targets and having the cap to finally do it

I think the most interesting part of the Penguins expansion draft list will be at goalie. If Jarry isnt protected... I am not buying the idea that the team still believes in him. If you believe in a guy to be your clear #1, you dont expose him over Casey DeSmith.

Oof. Trading a cost controlled, low cap middle six play driving winger for peanuts? That’s rough.

Seattle needs to take 3 goalies per the rules

DeSmith would be a perfect, cheap, under contract #3 for 1 season, and an obvious choice if they don't want to take on any cap (Zucker/Petts) and they get their 4th line players from other teams (ZAR)

I don't think Seattle would sniff Jarry with all the other options at goalie being available. Really neither Penguins goalie is really at risk, but DeSmith is a more likely if it's one or the other for Seattle

But I agree with you the the Pens aren't excited about what they have in net. Part of moving McCann and hoping the Kracken take Zucker could be having extra $$ to upgrade to a backup that could take over if necessary

Honestly, if DeSmith is that appealable to Seattle... the Penguins should expose him. If the big worry was Seattle grabbing one of your top 9 forwards, them picking your backup goalie would be a huge win.

And clearly Hextall is clearing room for John Gibson.

Whether they expose him or not, I guarantee you they're not fully on board with Jarry.
