As of now, it's gonna be tough just to re-sign Sanheim and pay two goalies.

A lot hinges on how much salary Seattle takes.

Seattle takes Hagg or NAK, so not much.

If ghost goes, they need a 3rd pair LD and a shutdown RD that can play against upper lineup forwards. Regardless of if ghost goes or not, they need that shutdown RD.
- The_Journeyman

i think york is penciled in for the 3D spot. Another RHD would be good

I’m not sure why you are turning this into a weird game , maybe you just don’t know what the injuries were. Hopefully someone will comment on them
- ClaudeFather

What weird game? Injuries and often a player plays is always on record regardless of what the injury is/are.

no doubt he is a good D, if he stays healthy he will be a good add. Losing the youth was the cost, you hope CF has another move or two. They still have all their picks, they still have nice pieces in the system, it will be an interesting end to July for sure.

I kind of think that well be trying to sign someone along with this move. Is Ellis your top flight number one dman? I’m not sure. Do you try to get suter for like 1 mil to play second pair?
- Hextall271

You tell me, why would a team that went into a tailspin, that would have finished bottom 10 if it was a full season, that is cash strapped, with many old vets, nowhere near contention, with so many question marks, why would they GAMBLE on a 30 year old injury prone player (no matter how good!!) with 6 years of pricey term remaining?

This was a time to grow, a time to nurture, a time to develop and be patient!

Why? Why?

I started the day by saying we need to live in realty, that the Flyers were going to change it up to compete, so why ask why, we all knew something was coming. I am just glad we didnt lose better younger pieces for the D we were looking for...

As I said, just chiming in. Do we have to dump a lot of salary to make this work. I expect so because Myers and Patrick were on lower cap hit contracts.

exactly, he doesnt know what he is talking about, 6.5 is a steal for him. Maybe not in 5 years but we can worry about that then

Well. Chuck was hired to be aggressive I’d say. When we poop the bed last year you knew this was coming. I am wondering how much more youth we jettison. I guess it’s now go time.

Such a steal that they got back essentially nothing for him. In other words, the thieves did not exactly line up for him.

Gee. I wonder why that might be. And if that why is visible to the "eye test."

Suter on the top 4 would be nice but do you want to have to move Sanheim to his off side to make it happen, He's still got growing pains to get through on his preferred side, Also doubt he signs for a minimum here, Maybe Tampa or Colorado but i bet we would have to pony a 2-2.5M to get him. Much rather another RHD Its been ages since this team had a true 3 lines of D with proper headedness on both sides. Its not necessary but would be a nice change of pace for this squad. Seems to be a split on this board in who thinks is good or bad, I love the move, but look forward to Bill's response and insight.

It’s a good point. We all knew that massive changes were coming. I can see them getting rid of Jake to make the money work. May have to send picks and retain but I expect that to happen.

The contribution of a player cannot be divorced from his contract/age/injury history and so on. You could be the best player on the planet, but if your cap hit/term or injury propensity is high enough, the overall bundle is not worth it.

Extreme example: Foppa in his last days. Still was a ppg player. When he played.

Nashville will protect 4 D men ahead of Ellis. In other words, Ryan Ellis' performance to cost/injury/age ratio is not just far from the best in the league, it is not even in the top 4 in his team.

And that really is all that you need to know about the Ryan Ellis trade. Otherwise, it wouldn't have happened for that cheap a price.

- PT21

What 4 defencemen would Nashville protect before Ellis?

I need more time to think about this, but it was a glaring need that needed to be addressed and the core has to be changed. Full stop. This hasn’t worked for 10 years.

Hope Seattle takes Jake or ghost. If not then jettison one of them with retained and picks I guess. Sign suter to two years at 2 mil? I don’t know.

I feared something like this was coming, but I was somewhat reassured he did not make a bad trade before start of last season for a RHD just for cheap thrills of a regular season respectability.

Josi, Ekhold, Carrier and that young kid, also a RHD. Forget his name.

I will say this. I don’t like throwing away all the young talent but we have 1 series win since 2012. We’re almost irrelevant. Not sure this is the right move but I can see why chuck is making a move like this. I hope it’s the end of young players being jettisoned though.

Best of luck to Myers and Patrick! I truly hope they thrive from this and reach their full potentials.

Overall it is a fair deal, top RHD does not come cheap. Welcome to the Flyers, Ryan Ellis! I hear the injury concerns, but the best part about this to me is the term for a reasonable AAV. They still have to address the future of the RHD position but for now, this is stability. Get out the pen for the starting lineup…

Hart

Provorov - Ellis

Now for the rest…Fletcher isn’t done yet.
