I mean it doesn’t change much. For a while now it was going to be a depth player, Ghost or Jake to most of us. If I were Seattle right now I’d be taking Hagg and be looking for my scoring elsewhere.
- hereticpride

Depending on the protection choices before this trade, Patrick or JVR could have been unprotected leaving for sure one more option for Seattle to pick from.

its not hard to say at all. Ellis is way better, and it isnt close
- bradster

Wow, and there is the blind side to fans. Is Ryan Ellis a healthy player, which I just presented to you and you just blatantly ignored.

I mean yeah but Patrick is just another depth player if we’re being honest and ignoring where he was drafted.

Who essentially would be the next forward / Dman to protect? They clearly want nothing to do with ghost. NAK, the walking penalty? Please take a bigger contract from us
- ClaudeFather

Maybe they protect nak to push them towards JVR. I get protecting JVR, guy gets poop but really is on a decent contract for what he brings but the flyers need different players, more speed

What am I missing here? Is the expectation is to step on the ice in your first game and become incredible within three years?
- SuperSchennBros

You're missing the fact that the Flyers got the best player in the trade and had to give up potentially good players for a proven top pair dman.

Does anyone remember, do the lists get revealed immediately, or do we ever find out? Potentially in the blog lol

Fair enough. I think the contract is the biggest issue. Even for Seattle.

I thought according to some posters that not a lot of moves would be made before Ed. Weird

i dont care if he misses 15-20 games, most players miss some time. its almost expected. You want safe, trade for yandle. but losing those 2 doest really affect us at all over last year. But gaining ellis does.

I do agree, but they did just get some value out of Patrick in the trade for Ellis, and they've now put themselves in a position where they're probably content with whomever Seattle takes, no compensation added.

True.

I don’t think I’ll be too bent out of shape with whoever Seattle takes from the Flyers. From a purely hockey standpoint at worst it’s Jake, but that also frees up a ton of cap to better address team needs.

i always hoped hed be good, and great size, but doesnt use it, not even in the corners, but the way he looked last year, im not so sure. So we are trading his potential for a sure thing, and i think thats good. and ellis has a good cap #, 6.5 is very good for his skill.
- bradster

The contribution of a player cannot be divorced from his contract/age/injury history and so on. You could be the best player on the planet, but if your cap hit/term or injury propensity is high enough, the overall bundle is not worth it.

Extreme example: Foppa in his last days. Still was a ppg player. When he played.

Nashville will protect 4 D men ahead of Ellis. In other words, Ryan Ellis' performance to cost/injury/age ratio is not just far from the best in the league, it is not even in the top 4 in his team.

And that really is all that you need to know about the Ryan Ellis trade. Otherwise, it wouldn't have happened for that cheap a price.

I don't see them protecting a different lower line player to force them to take someone like JVR. I think the Flyers still value JVR for what he does provide, I think this is the Flyers saying, if you want a player with talent and a contract for stability for a few years, take Voracek or Ghost. If those don't suit you, take NAK, Braun, Hagg, etc.

You’re not taking into account that they are pulling the plug on the team. They got back young players with upside in Glass and Myers.

True, and I’m totally fine with that. Didn’t change much, but we end up keeping the better contract if it was a Jake/JVR scenario, even though it would have most likely been neither
