The flaw in your argument was that they need to move him before he can get 5M next year. If he's worth 5M next year, that means he had a great year this year. In which case you can chose to sign him long-term, or trade him for more than Hallander and a 7th.

I'd say Dubas, Hex and Francis all had a chat haha... Francis was going to take a Leaf that Dubas didn't want to lose. Hex fine with losing the 2nd player Francis would want from Pens. So Francis ends up taking McCann from Leafs...
