I understand the Parise transaction. The Suter one is a bit more difficult to understand. Duncan Keith is 38 with a cap hit of $5.5 for 2 years and was traded for assets. Suter is 36 and if the Wild retained 50% his cap hit would be $3.75 mil over 4 years. I would think a few teams would be interested at this cap hit, especially if the actual $ amount is averaged at $2.5 mil over the 4 years. Seems odd to just cut, but I don’t know if Suter flat out said ‘No’ to any trades.

Most likely Suter said no to being traded. Otherwise we’d hear rumors of him being shopped around. This came out of left field.

The key will be can the draft picks from the past three years and this year step up to fill spots on the roster. They will have the right contract price to get over the 2022 to 2025 dead cap period. If the rumors on locker room leadership are true getting Parise and Sutter out now will stop young guys from getting the same habits. It is a risk, but how many other teams could be dumping veterans to meet cap space before next year starts. That can be picked up for league minimums and be better in the locker room for the young guys. Guerin press conference and local radio talk shows he keep hitting on getting younger and opening spots up for guys to step up.

Suter put them in a bad spot as if he wasnt willing to move, it left Dumba open as the other 2 dman have NMC and have to be protected. When i first saw this i was equally surprised as he still has value and presumably he should fetch as much as Chic got for Keith. But Keith was also willing to go to Edm, and doubt Suter was. So if the option was to keep him and lose Dumba, or cut Suter/retain cap and keep dumba it seems the later is better. To Suters credit, now he gets to double dip. After last year Guerrin has made me a believer as i didnt give the team a shot, and the Staal trade looked bad. But i think hes got a vision of how to build a team.

Part of the "locker room" issues of the past.

Well there you have it. Interestingly, Yeo was a Pittsburgh assistant when Guerin was there so he probably had some inclinations to this all ahead of time.

With the way he unloaded Staal and then Parise & Sutter in succession, I think it shows just how committed Guerin is to changing the culture in Minnesota. Feels like it had been a spot for some of the good old boys to go back, collect a paycheque and act entitled.

This will be very tough to manage in future seasons but Guerin has been doing an A+ job so far.

Parise yes, Suter no. Parise was clearly on his way out of the lineup, and the healthy scratches made this abundantly clear. But having them average 10.5M for the first 9 seasons on the their front loaded deal sure made them rich men. They stand to lose just 2.5M of their total 98M deals and will recapture that with ease if they so choose.

Suter has racked up nearly 300 points since he turned 30! that is insane. Last season he took a dip, but he can still play and eat pucks on the PK. Given the biggest 3 seasons of the cap penalty is so close to the actual AAV he carried for 4 seasons, it doesn't make sense. It's hard to believe that they couldn't move him 50% retained...

As for Parise, sad to see but it is better than watching him get health bombed the remaining 4 seasons. Just bad for team morale and all appearances in general. I won't be surprised if they both become islanders after the expansion draft.

Dumba has now cost the Wild Tuch and Suter over the two expansion drafts.

To be fair teams usually get crazy when trying to sign star UFA’s, so the Wild may have promised Parise/Suter some special treatment just to get them to sign

The only logical reasons for getting rid of both is clearly a matter of cultural issues. Otherwise it makes zero sense to buy out Suter. My best guess is that he would have only created more internal problems with his displeasure of Parises forced departure. Guessing he would never have waived hid NMC so it was a no brainer for Billy.
